Job Description

Corbetti Geothermal PLC (CGC) is a Special Purpose Vehicle company, incorporated in late 2014 under Ethiopian law, specifically formed to develop the Corbetti geothermal resource in Corbetti locality of Shalla Woreda, West Arsi Zone of the Oromia National Regional State, Ethiopia. The Project is located within the Corbetti Caldera 250 km south of Addis Ababa, next to Lake Hawassa. The Corbetti caldera geothermal resource covers an area of 155 km² of extensive young volcanism, the resource estimated to be in the order of 1,000 MW and steam temperatures in excess of 250⁰C. The development requires construction of access roads to well pads, construction of well pads, a water supply line and assembly of rig and rig equipment, exploration drilling and finally construction and operation of power plants. The company plans to develop geothermal power of 150 MWe of power.

Summary of the Position

  • The Environment Officer is responsible for ensuring that care is taken to minimise impact on the environment in the Corbetti Geothermal project from project activities.

  • The Environment Officer will conduct a variety of activities that promote best practices in environmental management and will work with, educate and monitor project activities including those by contractors, suppliers and the community

  • Monitor how staff, contractors and suppliers manage their activities in a manner that protects the environment

  • Implement and improve the Waste Management Plan, monitoring waste disposal and recording relevant statistics

  • Develop and use a variety of environmental management checklists to assess compliance with company requirements.

  • Check Standard Operating Procedures regularly to ensure they remain an environmentally friendly method of working.

  • Provide environmental management input to accident investigation activities.

  • Lead the management of incidents which have a direct environmental impact, including spills and overflows, to mitigate impacts and restore the situation.

  • Preparing environmental inspection plans

  • Provide input to audits and inspections of activities to ensure that the activities are conducted in an environmentally friendly manner

  • Conduct inspections of facilities including camps, logistics areas and rig areas to ensure they are managed and maintained in an environmentally friendly manner.

  • Plan and implement environmental reinstatement and restoration plan and programmes.

  • Identify and record environmental hazards in the project area.

  • Record environmental statistics in the field.

  • Make regular environmental management reports to managers according to the ESMS and ESMP and as required by management

  • Maintain and implement the Biodiversity Management Plan

  • Record and monitor fuel, water and electricity usage by the project

  • Help implement environmental initiatives, including those designed to help mitigate and reduce the impacts of climate change locally.

  • Make and deliver presentations on environmental topics as training for staff and the community.

  • Supervise air quality and air pollution equipment and facilities, including arranging equipment maintenance, downloading data, some data analysis and making reports on the data.

  • Together with the health and safety supervisor develop and provide induction training to new staff, visitors and contractors on environmental topics.

  • Educate local community on environmental matters

  • Support CLOs in promoting environmental management by the community

Organisational Position

  • The Environmental Officer will report to the Environment & Community Manager.

  • The position is based in the Corbetti Geothermal project area with occasional visits to the office in Addis Ababa.

  • This role will work very closely with contractor Health & Safety personnel and also the contractor Rig Manager.

Job Requirements

Experience

  • At least two years’ experience in an environmental role

  • An undergraduate degree in Environmental Science or Sustainability

  • Ability to do assessments, write reports and do analysis is important.

  • Ability to use Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint is important.

  • Good written and spoken English is mandatory.

  • Written and spoken Afan Oromo is desirable.
