Job Description

TThe Ethiopian Medical Association (EMA) is one of the first professional associations in Ethiopia. The Association has been formally established on July 2, 1962 G.C with 100 founding members and through a formal charter granted to it by the then Emperor Haile Selassie I and is member of World Medical Association since 1994 G.C.

EMA’s head office is based in Addis Ababa and has a presence in five regions represented by its nine regional branch offices (Gonder, Mekelle, Bahir Dar, Dessie, Jimma, Adama, Harare, Hawassa, Arba Minch, Ambo and Assosa). EMA has been operational for over 58 years on promoting quality of medical service in Ethiopia and evidence-based medicine through publishing the Ethiopian Medical Journal (EMJ). The mission of the association is to: Ensure that the community gets quality health service and care; Promote the highest standards in medical education, science, art and practice and Ensure the rights and benefits of medical professionals (doctors) and act as their voice

Thus, the association would like to invite experienced and competent candidates for the following listed vacant posts: 

Under the supervision of the EMJ Research and Publication Manager, the Senior Research Officer is responsible for research and publication-related activities of the association with a main focus on leading Ethiopian Medical Journal publication activities including manuscripts management in collaboration with the journal manager and editorial board. The job holder is also responsible for improving the research performance capacity of the association including initiation and management of research projects, providing research related technical support for the management of EMA, the government and other stakeholders who have a stake in research in health-related issues. He/she is also responsible to coordinate, facilitate, and provide technical support for other publication initiative of EMA. The job incumbent is also responsible to enhance the research capacity of EMA members and secretariat through capacity building. 

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Leading the manuscript management activities with the journal manager and EMJ editorial Board

  • Conduct, screening, copyediting, proofreading and layout check for all manuscripts submitted to and/or accepted on EMJ and communicate authors for final proof reading of their manuscripts before publication

  • Design ways to enhance the quality manuscript submission and uptake of research evidence published on EMJ by practitioners, health managers, and health policymakers in the country and beyond

  • Advancing the visibility of Ethiopian Medical journal.

  • Lead the identification, write-up, and application of research and related grant applications in the interest of the Association

  • Promotes research, learning, and knowledge transfer culture in the organization and other stakeholders working with EMA,

  • Work to enhance the role of the Association in the promotion of research evidence use to improve the quality of health care in the country

  • Lead the activities of the research standing committee.

  • Facilitates the planning and development of different publications that address priority issues of the Association.

  •  Supports the organization of conferences, seminars, meetings, and campaigns related to health research and coordinates the publication of the proceedings, call for actions, and position papers

  • Lead the design, conduct, and use of research for organizational learning in the Association

  • Promotes research, learning and knowledge transfer culture in the organization and the dissemination of research results,

  • Prepares call for paper and invites from potential researchers by disseminating the invitation using appropriate media for maximum response rate.

  • Facilitates the collection of manuscripts and forward prospective papers to the  EMJ Editorial Board

  • Arranges trainings and experience sharing forums for the members of EMA on research and publication matters through collaboration with other units of the organization.

  • Perform other duties assigned to him /her by the immediate supervisor.

Job Requirements

1Education and Qualification

  • MPH/MSc/MD/BSc in any health related profession.

  • Minimum 6/8 years of related experience with strong research and publication background and skills. In addition, extensive knowledge and experience in research, copy editing, publication and publication database are highly recommended.

  • Publication of at least five research articles in reputable journals as primary author or corresponding author

  • Experience as a journal manager, editorial board member, academic editor and other work experience on research and publication activities is desired.

  • Experience in an international NGO environment is desired.

Additional Training :

  • Research Training Certificate

  • SPSS or STATA or Ep-Info or other statistical package software

  • Project/ Program Management training Certificate is an added value

Language

  • Fluency in spoken and written English.
