Who we are

SOS Children’s Villages Ethiopia is an International Non-governmental organization and a member of SOS Children’s Villages International Federation. The organization started its humanitarian work with the opening of its first Village in Mekelle, Northern part of Ethiopia in 1974. The organization has been providing life-saving provisions such as food, water and health services for a very significant number of children devastated by severe drought and the subsequent famine.

Today, we have grown significantly to meet the persistent challenges that confront Ethiopian children who have lost parental care and are at risk of losing their parental care. Working in close collaboration with international donors, local government and community based organizations across seven program locations; SOS Children’s Villages Ethiopia aspires that every child grows up with love, respect and security.

SOS Hermann Gmeiner Schools is looking for a Secondary School Principal who is responsible for planning, coordinating and directing the work and day to day activities of teaching professionals; supporting the preparation and controlling of budgets; implementation of academic, social and emotional learning programs.

Your role....

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Hold a belief that all students can achieve at high level,

  • Influence others to achieve results; and build strong relationship based on mutual respect, trust and empathy,

  • Set high standards for the professional practice of instruction and assessment that result in high achievement and accountability for all learners,

  • Develops, implements and evaluates curricular and co-curricular programs to accelerate learning for students in the primary school

  • Commitment to classroom teaching by setting clear expectations and observing, coaching and evaluating teachers and staff,

  • Have ability and willingness to support teachers in using effective instructional strategies to meet students’ diverse learning needs

  • Proactively promotes the success of all students by ensuring management of the organization, operations, and resources for a safe, efficient, and effective learning environment

  • Ensures that the school is a professional learning community by establishing and maintaining processes and systems that result in recruitment, induction, support, evaluation, development, and retention of high-performing staff

  • Manages time in relation to student learning priorities

  • Use data to identify student learning trends, set goals, monitor and modify instruction, and improves students achievement

  • Develops school culture and practices that rely on data to inform professional development and decision making

  • Understands the school community within the social and cultural context of the broader community

  • Demonstrate collaborative behavior with the school staff and community members to create a positive context for learning by fulfilling professional responsibilities with honesty and integrity, and serving as a model for the professional behavior of others

  • Manage budgets, prioritize expenditures, and seek innovative methods for providing school resources;

  • Promote and market educational program and services of the school;

  • Communicate clearly and effectively in both oral and written language (English and Amharic, and preferably additional languages);

  • Establish and maintain positive, respectful relationships with a variety of people and stakeholders

Job Requirements

Educational Qualification

  • MA/MSc degree or above in Educational Planning and Management, Educational Leadership, Curriculum, Pedagogical Science, Educational Psychology, or related discipline;

  • Additional training in educational leadership, gender and inclusion, child safeguarding, education quality improvement, school management, human resource management, financial management and physical resource management

Experience:

  • Minimum of 6 years’ experience in similar school management positions

  • Prior experience in teaching is desirable,

  • Experience of coaching and developing staff,

  • Experience working with a culturally and linguistically diverse community environment,

 Knowledge of:

  • Regional and federal laws applying to private schools and foreign charities

  • Special education needs and issues

  • Modern educational theories and approaches

  • Social and emotional learning programs

  • Budget preparation and control procedures
