Alight works closely with displaced persons, returnees, refugees and communities affected by natural and man-made disasters, providing a range of integrated assistance including primary and curative health care, water and sanitation, protection services, restoration of strategic health and water infrastructure, dignified housing for returning refugees, and sustainable job creation. Alight has also built strong relationships with development partners, agencies, as well as federal and local governments in order to approach challenges in an inclusive and holistic manner and come up with innovative solutions that best fits the local context.

PRIMARY PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:

The main purpose of the position is to provide support to the WASH team on the hardware components of the WASH program including construction and drilling/rehabilitation of water points especially in the areas of BOQ development, drawing/designs and day to day supervision of field works to ensure contractors deliver quality infrastructure works including but not limited to latrines and water points construction/rehabilitation, installation of electro-mechanical equipment, construction and/or rehabilitation of health facilities, GBV women centers, etc.

PRIMARY DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop sanitation messages that are appropriate to the targeted communities and ensure the messages are in line with WASH guidelines.

  • Provide the necessary trainings to community artisans on different affordable WASH technologies.

  • Ensure the site selection for WASH facilities and usage is done in accordance with WASH sphere standards.

  • Supervise the construction of WASH facilities in target communities, schools, health facilities and any other targeted site and Monitor for proper use of the facilities.

  • Conduct assessments to identify the existing gabs in sanitation/electro mechanical/water systems within communities and provide recommendations for decision making.

  • Guide communities on collection, storage, transportation and proper disposal of solid waste.

  • Provide daily/weekly or monthly progress reports as required.

  • Contribute to the monitoring and evaluation of WASH activities by collecting appropriate data from selected beneficiaries when needed using appropriate tools.

  • Conduct regular site visits to supervise and/or monitor progress and quality of WASH activities in the target sites.

  • Carry out distribution of sanitation items /tools to target beneficiaries and keep good record of the items.

  • Undertakes detail maintenance/rehabilitation need assessments of existing water supply sources, including electro-mechanical parts and hand pumps.

  • Prepare detail specification of part numbers and spare parts necessary to fix identified problems on electro-mechanical parts (pumps, generator, control panels, etc) of water supply schemes.

  • Carry out technical evaluation of electromechanical equipment and serve as a focal person for quality inspection of the same.

  • Support other WASH activities when necessary.

  • The duties and responsibilities as set out above are not exhaustive and the WASH technician may be required to carry out additional duties within reasonableness of his/her level of skills and experience.

Job Requirements

EDUCATION, TECHNICAL SKILLS & KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED

  • MSc/BSC/Diploma in Water/Electro-Mechanical/Electrical/and/or water resource management from recognized university/college/TVET.

  • More than two years for BSc and three years for advanced diploma holders, of proven experience in areas of pump test, generator installation, generator servicing and maintenance, pump installation and servicing, plumbing and related water works.

  • Excellent technical and report writing skills, Computer literate.

  • Experience in NGO will be an asset.
