Job Description
The Ethiopia Research Fellow is responsible for field-based and desktop research in support of the TRAIL (Transformative Access for Improved Livelihoods) project in Ethiopia, which B2P is operating in partnership with Helvetas Ethiopia. Specifically, the Fellow will be responsible for conducting research in service of a study on the effectiveness of maintenance methods in rural infrastructure development, and the acquisition and organization of rural infrastructure data within national and regional governments.
Duties and Responsibilities
Serve as a representative of B2P and Helvetas to important external stakeholders
Support the design of key project studies, including defining key research questions, methodologies, analysis plans, and data collection plans
Oversee engagement with local universities with respect to specific research projects
Collect, collate, clean, and analyze multimodal data from multiple sources across multiple countries
Synthesize findings in a concise, clear, and relevant manner
Produce peer-review quality reports and manuscripts
Present findings to internal and external stakeholders
Any additional duties specified by the supervisor.
Required Qualification and Experiences:
Undergraduate degree in a relevant field (Engineering, GIS, Int’l Development, etc.), or equivalent relevant experience
Experience in remote and field-based data collection
Experience in desktop research, including academic manuscript development
MS Office and mobile data collection systems
Ability to coordinate with various players and manage multiple components of product development while keeping the ‘big picture’ in mind.
Flexible, creative, and independent
Excellent written and spoken Amharic and English
Other Desirable Experiences:
Knowledge or experience in rural transport needs, local government communications, basic construction/civil engineering principles, and maintenance frameworks
Program implementation
GIS
Database development and management
Masters preferred
Working Conditions:
This position requires living full-time in Ethiopia, with regular travel to countries in the region. Work outside of regular office hours may be expected. Fellowship would be expected to start in March 2023 ending in February, 2024. The contract is expected to be renewed each March as needed.
Physical Requirements:
This position will require field work periodically, which could require hiking multiple miles in steep terrain.
