Job Description
The Health and Nutrition Manager is responsible for the management of Primary Health Care in all projects. The position holder will supervise Health and nutrition interventions: provide specialized inputs into planning, implementation, and reporting of health & nutrition interventions in the field; provide training to health & nutrition staff thereby enabling them to implement health & nutrition interventions within quality parameters.
Humanitarian and Developmental Program Management
Keeping up to date with best practices in health and nutrition in order to act as an expert; providing advice and guidance as required. On request, providing accurate, complete and up-to-date information required for effective strategic and tactical planning in the health and nutrition departments
Responsible for the implementation, management, supervision, and support of the assigned nutrition and health interventions in line with the time frame of the relevant project proposal and any applicable national and international guidelines and standards.
Continuously monitor and supervise all project activities, evaluating progress through outputs and impacts using both quantitative and qualitative data, and involving the health and nutrition team (and where applicable local health authorities) in analysis and taking appropriate action as needed to ensure continued progress.
Provide input into the integration of beneficiary participation and accountability in all aspects of the project.
Contribute to new proposals, linked to the assessed needs and gaps and the country strategy, in conjunction with the Program Director.
Support the logistics activities of health & nutrition staff, particularly in relation to the purchasing of medicines, supplies and equipment for the assigned nutrition facilities and activities.
Representation, Coordination and Advocacy
Keeping up to date with best practices in health and nutrition in order to act as an expert; providing advice and guidance as required. On request, providing accurate, complete and up-to-date information required for effective strategic and tactical planning in the health and nutrition departments
Together with partners and the health and nutrition teams, coordinate monitoring, evaluation, accountability, and learning of DPO, and Outreach Community activities to ensure efficiency, accountability, and impact thereby enabling DPO to build local influence in health & nutrition initiatives and policy development.
Facilitate regular meetings to assist information sharing between project staff, to ensure all staff members are aware of project objectives and current work plans and to provide the opportunity for feedback.
Manage the correct and timely ordering of needed stocks and supplies to the field location sites in coordination with the Health and Nutrition officers
Ensure health & nutrition projects are implemented in line with donor proposals and requirements
Participate in health and nutrition coordination meetings, & internal training, and other working groups or meetings as required, representing the organization and feeding back to the health and nutrition on relevant issues.
Staff Management and Technical Guidance
Provide strong leadership of the assigned health and nutrition project teams, working to ensure both short and long-term positive impacts and outcomes for the beneficiaries, local health and nutrition authorities (where applicable), and local staff.
Provide training for local staff in line with the appropriate international and national guidelines.
Provide coaching and technical supervision to staff in order to develop ownership and full responsibility for Health & nutrition activities.
Assess the training needs of all staff and ensure that appropriate training is conducted, and new skills are used in the field. Promote the health and security of the team by ensuring the application of security guidelines.
Qualifications:
Education: degree/ Master in Medicine, Nutrition, Food Science, Dietetics, Public Health, Nursing, or other related fields of study.
Experience: Minimum 8 years for MB/BN or 6 years for MA/MSC experience in a development environment leading, managing, and implementing development projects, preferably in the humanitarian organization (NGO) at least 2 years in a senior (management) level.
Experience in health and nutrition projects in humanitarian contexts is a plus.
Essential Competencies & Skill
Proven capacity to negotiate and work with governments at different levels
Experience leading project implementation in a development environment and/or conflict zones
Good computer skills (Excel, Microsoft, PowerPoint and Outlook, ERP);
Good understanding of international human rights and principles of humanitarian work;
Previous working experience with humanitarian agencies will be considered a strong advantage;
Fluency in written and spoken English. Fluency in local spoken languages is taken as advantage.
