Laboratory Technologist perform clinical testing including specimen processing, test performance, and reporting of results; these include routine and specialized clinical laboratory testing in areas of Parasitology, Urinalysis, Serology, Hematology, Immunology, Clinical Chemistry, and/or Bacteriology.

Duties & Responsibilities:

• Read procedures fully before performing any tasks. Ensure that SOPs are complete and updated.

• Prepare job-related documents and records

• Ensure that specimens received for testing have fulfilled acceptance criteria following the established Procedure. 

• Maintain an adequate supply of all reagents and consumables. Note the date when reagents/supplies are received and opened in the “Reagent/Supplies Log Sheets”. 

• Calibrate instruments and perform all routine daily, weekly, monthly, and periodic preventative and corrective maintenance and function checks and repairs on instruments and equipment following established Procedures. Document all maintenance performed on “Instrument Log Sheets”.

• Perform instrumentation troubleshooting to correct problems; refer problems appropriately to the responsible person..

• Perform, evaluate, and document quality control data and assure that patient results are not reported when tolerance limits are exceeded; document quality occurrences in compliance with the quality plan of the section; advise Quality officer of significant quality control/quality assurance issues.  

• Analyze technical problems pertaining to specimen adequacy, laboratory data, and instrumentation; determine the cause and rectifies problems in accordance with guidelines and procedures. 

• Confirm abnormal results and result discrepancies and initiate follow-up to resolve discrepancies.

• Review and approve laboratory results according to standard operating procedures; report critical (panic) values or unusual results in accordance with established policy.

• Participate in in-service education programs.

• Participate in the preparation for all inspections by accrediting agencies.

• Participate in training of new employees and other staff.

• Ensure the confidentiality of all patient information throughout all phases of laboratory testing. 

• Process specimens for referral testing following established Procedure.

• Respond to customer inquiries about laboratory results.

• Adhere to the customer service standards of a laboratory. 

• Generate data and provide day-to-day documentation.

• Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
