Job Description
The Armauer Hansen Research Institute (AHRI) was founded in 1970 through the initiative of the Norwegian and Swedish Save the Children organizations seconded by the Ministry of Health of Ethiopia. The Institute got its name from the Norwegian physician, Gerhard Henrik Armauer Hansen, who first described the leprosy bacillus (Mycobacterium leprae). AHRI is a biomedical research institute that works in developing tools for prevention, control and treatment of mycobacterium and other diseases of public healthy importance through applied and basic biomedical research and training.
AHRI in collaboration with APOPO, a Belgian NGO that trains rats to detect landmines, tuberculosis and much more is launching a project that aims to enhance tuberculosis case detection among health facilities across Addis Ababa City Administration using trained rats. The objective of the project is to find smear positive tuberculosis patients that are missed by the conventional method (microscopy) and bring them to treatment so as to contain the spread of the disease to the community. AHRI would like to hire qualified candidate in the position of Junior Researcher (Laboratory Technologist) for this project.
Be responsible for the routine sample collection, transport, storage and presentation to the rats
Conduct routine smear preparation, microscopic examination and other laboratory analyses as required
Actively participate in the internal and external quality control scheme as appropriate
Ensure laboratory safety and regulations are practiced and laboratory equipment are properly handled, cleaned, and maintained
Handle any other duty given by the laboratory supervisor, researcher and/or program manager
Qualification
B.Sc. degree in Medical Laboratory Sciences from an accredited institution with an excellent English proficiency.
Minimum cGPA of 3.00 for male and 2.75 for female (please mention your cGPA in your CV)
Registered and licensed by the Ethiopian Ministry of Health
Experience in medical laboratory (hospital, health center, health research institute) preferably in a TB laboratory is advantageous
Hands on experience in using laboratory equipment, their proper handling and routine maintenance is an asset
Experience in the National TB quality control scheme is a plus
Other Competencies
