Orbis International is a nonprofit humanitarian organization that works in developing countries to save sight worldwide. Orbis prevents and treats blindness through hands-on training, public health education, improved access to quality eye care, and partnerships with local health care organizations in an effort to eliminate avoidable blindness.  Orbis International-Ethiopia (License no. 1063) is a legally registered country office of this organization carrying out the same mission in Ethiopia since 1998.

JOB SUMMARY 

As a full-time member of Orbis Ethiopia Country Program, the Communications Manager (CM) contributes to the implementation of Orbis’s communications, marketing, fundraising, knowledge center and reporting initiatives in an effort to be recognized as the most trusted, inspiring partner in global ophthalmology.

 The Communications Manager provides strategic, administrative and logistical and learning support across all OIE projects and its management and collaborates with the team to enhance Orbis’s impact in Ethiopia and promote Orbis International and Ethiopia interests meaningfully   across donors, partners, and government hierarchies.

 DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Under the overall supervision and guidance of the Orbis International Ethiopia, Deputy Country Director, the Communications Manager will have the following specific duties and responsibilities:

 Communication and Program Management

  • Lead the preparation of events and conferences, including supporting AV needs, creating signage, coordinating onsite photographers, and participating in design of print and digital informational and promotional materials.

  • Support press/media initiatives by assisting in the creation and distribution of media materials, including press releases, fact sheets, talking points, photo selections, media lists, media monitoring reports, etc.

  • Contribute to the production of print/digital PR tools and materials, including paid advertisements, sponsored content, marketing collateral (e.g., brochures, annual reports, etc.), TV spots, etc.

  • Supports Program Department with editorial works of Concept Papers, Project Plans, Quarterly, Annual, Donor-Specific Periodic Activity Reports, Research Papers, development of ICC/BCC materials, etc.

  • Assist in a full range of activities related to summarizing, proofreading, and transcribing programmatic reports to donors and partners.

  • Support interactions with consultants and vendors to ensure smooth production of IEC/BCC materials and other promotional products.

  • Regularly update photo database with Orbis photography/video, captions, and keywords for internal and external use.

  • Field email inquiries, including journalist inquiries and promotional pitches, and escalate to the appropriate team members.

  • Assist NY Communications team in updating and maintenance of Orbis ET website and intranet pages by providing updates as needed and directed by the team.

  • Support staff members with brand identity inquiries, ensuring proper distribution and use of all logos, brand colors, and other brand assets.

  • Support cost center managers in implementation and monitoring of communications and IEC/BCC related budget.

  • Assist the Program  Director in planning meetings via Outlook calendar, setting up video conferences via Zoom or other technology, distributing agendas ahead of time, and minutes/next steps afterward.

  • Create documents, presentations, and spreadsheets for Orbis Program leadership team as needed.

  • Liaises with Embassies, other Government & Non-Government, and International organizations to build Orbis’s image/brand and promote its accomplishments.

  • Performs other activities assigned by the supervisor. Liaise with global communications team and other colleagues across all offices to ensure proper management of all communications initiatives.

  • Encourage a culture of knowledge sharing and collaborative work flow among departments and project teams,

  • Making sure that the right knowledge goes to the right people, and that this information is promptly applied to organizational activities. And help employees capture new knowledge with the usage of a  knowledge management system

  • Promoting collaboration and knowledge sharing through defining, supporting and encouraging the use of knowledge to employees of all skill levels and roles

  • In collaboration with the M&E team, support efforts in data analysis, data visualization and presentation. He/She team up with program people and generate annual report and engage in publications effectively.

Job Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Communications, Public Health, Marketing, Public Relations, Journalism  or related field.

  • Master’s degree in the fields of study is a plus.  

  • Six years’ worth of work experience in a media and communications, marketing or public relations field is desirable.

SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Superior written and oral communications skills.

  • Keen attention to detail and organization.

  • Able to both multitask and work independently amidst tight deadlines

  • Strong interpersonal and diplomacy skills

  • Flexible, proactive and hands-on work style.

  • Resourceful and creative approach to problem-solving.

  • Must be able to quickly turn around professional-quality PowerPoint presentations/slideshows

  • Will use Microsoft Office 365, Skype for Business, SharePoint, Zoom

  • Proficiency in Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, or any other graphic design tools a plus

  • Video editing skills a plus

  • Well equipped with the knowledge base features, functionality,

  • Possesses soft skills such as  great leadership, effective communication, coaching and team work skills

  • Data visualization and graphics design
