Job Description

Duty Station: ACEPS, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia within the vicinity of Tikur Anbessa Specialized Hospital (TASH). Willingness to travel to research sites within and outside Addis Ababa, as deemed necessary, is mandatory. 

Context: ACEPS is a research centre established in 2017 through collaboration between Addis Ababa University (AAU) and the Bergen Centre for Ethics and Priority Setting (BCEPS), University of Bergen. ACEPS has been engaged in a range of activities including providing technical support to key policy undertakings at FMOH and Ethiopia Health Insurance Agency, capacity building of staff members of the Federal Ministry of Health and research activities in collaboration with institutions both within and outside Ethiopia. It’s main areas of support are on priority setting of health interventions, economic evaluations and medical ethics.

 Main purpose of the job:

  • The main purpose of the job is to support medical ethics section of Addis Centre for Ethics and Priority Setting (ACEPS) by providing medical ethics education, medical ethics consultations, establish and support clinical ethics committee and conduct research on medical ethics. 

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

Medical ethics consultation for clinical practice

  • Consult and, when needed, facilitate medical ethics training for the hospital administrators and health professionals. The training areas could include both general medical ethics principles and medical ethics guidelines and related policies specific to the Ethiopian healthcare context.

Medical ethics education consultation

  • Review and, when needed, revise and update the medical ethics course content in close consultation with all concerned experts and authorities.

  • Work with and assist the admin personnel in the coordination of lectures, including assigning lecturers, following up on schedules, ensuring that students get the needed documents, etc.

  • Assist with examination and assessment of students

Establish and support clinical ethics committee at TASH

  • Work with the college and hospital leadership to establish and support clinical ethics committee at TASH

  • Work closely with the hospital ethics committee to examine policies/instruments and offer inputs.

 Medical ethics research and outreach

  • Promote (bio) medical ethics research at Addis Ababa University and, whenever possible, other universities for which doing so would be of great value.

  • Initiate ways to link researchers and research activities focusing on (bio)medical ethics in Ethiopia

  • Identify research areas and conduct researches on medical ethics

Type of Contract: 30 months term from April 1, 2023 to December 31, 2024 with a three-month probation period. 

Reporting to: Director of Addis Centre for Ethics and Priority Setting (ACEPS)

Job Requirements

Academic background, work experience requirements and essential competencies:

  • Academic requirements:  Minimum M.SC. Degree in Ethics

  • Experience: 1-2 years of experience in related sector as Ethicist

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; Language skill: English (fluent), Amharic (fluent) 

  • Proficient skills in data management and analytic skills

  • Computer skills: Proficiency Microsoft office and statistical software such as STATA and R is desirable. 

  • Strong team work skills

  • Good organizational, interpersonal and time management skills

  • Commitment to values of the working discipline at ACEPS

  • Protects the centre’s values by keeping information confidential

  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple functions (documentation of minutes and summaries, follow-up on assigned tasks, planning and handling logistics, etc.)

  • Complies fully with the set reporting deadlines and guidelines

 Expected deliverables:

  • Monthly report on status of medical ethics activities including medical ethics teaching and the clinical ethics committee activities

  • At least one research paper on medical ethics

  • Participation in regular meetings at ACEPS

  • Revised medical ethics teaching materials
