Who we are

 SOS Children’s Villages Ethiopia is an International Non-governmental organization and a member of SOS Children’s Villages International Federation. We started our humanitarian work in Ethiopia with the opening of our first Village in Mekelle, Northern part of Ethiopia in 1974. Since then, we have expanded our programs to different regions where there are significant needs for intervention and where we believe we can work in partnership with all relevant actors to bring sustainable positive outcomes for children’s and young people.

 Today, we have grown significantly to meet the persistent challenges that confront Ethiopian children who have lost parental care and those that are at risk of losing their parental care. Working in close collaboration with international donors, local government and community based organizations across seven program locations; we aspire that every child grows up with love, respect and security.

Why we need you?

 We are looking for a  project Education Officer who will be Contributing to the national goal of empowering children, women and youth, with a particular focus on the Welfare of most vulnerable children. The position holder will act as the focal point for the education sector in the area of operation, provide leadership for the project team regarding education strategic directions. He/She works under the direct supervision of the project coordinator and will coordinate the adaption of educational policies in collaboration with the district office of Education. He/She will liaise with partners to assess the education context, identify and address gaps, to develop annual implementation plans and to monitor the Programme and assess impact. He/She will develop innovative education approaches for emerging needs, including attention to special needs, girls, and pre-school education etc activities. And will foster and ensure inter-sectoral linkages with child protection, gender, livelihoods and health, among others

 Your role?

While working with us a project Education Officer you will be in charge of the following,

  • Lead the initial assessment of families of potential child participants,

  • Facilitate the preparation of a family’s first family development plan (FDP),

  •  Prepare detailed implementation plan and budget for the intervention area,

  • Implement all project activities according to the objectives and indicators set out in the project document and time frame,

  • Prepare project progress report with the required quality and time.

  • Assess and identify the needs and gaps of the respective target schools,

  • Facilitate and/or provide training to volunteers, teachers and school community on project related activities,

  • Provide technical support to project implementing partners and schools,

  • Work closely with WEO and other government offices and project implementing partner,

  • Ensure the delivery of purchased materials to target beneficiaries and its proper usage,

  • Follow up of clubs activities accomplishment according to the project objective,

  • Facilitate and participate in data collection related to different assessment, baseline and end line survey for the project,

  • Using appropriate M&E framework and tools, periodically monitor the status and progress of achievement of the projects activities in target schools,

  • Follow up of cascading of different trainings at schools and community level,

  • Produce case stories and share to the line supervisor every quarter,

  • Build complementarity of SOS CVE partner actions, build consensus of locally-appropriate, interventions between agencies: avoiding duplication and gaps,

  • Contribute to Program data base that consolidate and analyze information that is critical to decision making.

 Child safeguarding

  • Support the process of ensuring that child safeguarding and child protection mainstreaming are integrated into all M&E frameworks through measurable output and outcome indicators

  • Support the process of piloting and scaling up local level beneficiary complaints’ mechanisms in relation to staff conduct, with an emphasis on the Child Protection Policy and measure to prevent children from any sort of abuse.

  • Responsible to take part in awareness raising sessions and capacity building trainings in relation to CS and Code of Conduct and to prevent and protect children and young people from all forms of abuse, abandonment, exploitation, violence and discrimination

  • Support children and young people to make them understand the CS risks and protection mechanisms

  • Responsible to report any CS suspicion, concern, allegation or incident immediately, following Child Safeguarding reporting procedures. CS reports should be made to the CS team at programme level and/or to the respective line manager

Job Requirements

Must Criteria

  • Education: B.A./B.Sc./B.Ed. degree in Educational planning and Management, project management, Pedagogical science, sociology or related fields

  • Experience: A minimum of three years’ experience in planning, implementing and supervision of educational projects

       Competencies – Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

  • Good verbal and written communication skills.

  • Awareness and basic understanding of issues affecting orphans & vulnerable children

  • Understanding of child development issues, including knowledge of child rights, child protection, child welfare, childcare and parenting; and relevant local and national laws, regulations and protocols.

  • Good analytical and reporting skills, including ability to identify problems and possible solutions, and ability to clearly reflect these in a report.

  • Collaboration skills, being driven to work with others and able to build strong working relationships community members and groups.

  • Hands on experience on planning, implementing and supervision of educational projects

  • Demonstrated understanding of the Ethiopian education policy.

  • Experience in Training need Assessment, Planning and Facilitation

  • Demonstrated understanding of the Ethiopian education policy

  • Proven experience in facilitation and community mobilization skills

  • Technical and report writing skills

  • Fluent spoken and written English: Fluency in at least one of the languages spoken in the program’s target area is a plus

  • Experienced in Monitoring, evaluation and reporting is an advantage
