Amref Health Africa, the largest African led international organization on the continent, provides training and health services to over 35 countries in Africa. Founded in 1957 as the Flying Doctors of East Africa to bring critical health services to remote communities, Amref Health Africa now delivers technical assistance on community-based health care.

Although Amref Health Africa has been formally registered in Ethiopia in 1998, a full-fledged country program with a country office started in 2002. Since then, the country program has grown from one project in Addis Ababa to more than 20 projects in Afar, Amhara, Benishangul-Gumuz, Gambella, Oromia, SNNP, Ethiopia Somali regions and nationwide health systems strengthening interventions focusing the capacity building of the national Health Extension Program.

We are looking for community fieldworkers to support data collection and translation/transcription for an ongoing ethnographic study that will inform AMREF’s co-design and implementation of maternal and newborn health (MNH) interventions in pastoralist settings. The study will be conducted in three pastoralist woredas, three (03) in Afar region (Chifra), three (03) in Somalia region (Degehabur), and three (03) in the South Nations, Nationalities and peoples region (Dasenech woreda in South Omo zone). The main purpose of the study is to gain deeper insights into the experience of pastoralist women’s access to maternity health services, the facilitators and barriers, and the influence of cultural beliefs and practices on these experiences. The project aims to improve access to and utilization of life saving RMNCH services, ensure quality of essential health services and strengthening governance and accountability through bidirectional accountability and managerial accountability for PHC.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

Community Fieldworkers will be responsible for supporting ethnographic qualitative data collection activities (IDI, FGDs, and observations), taking field notes and translation and/or transcription of audio-records. 

Key Responsibilities

·         Contribute to the mapping of stakeholders and community members for participation in the study

·         Participate in training and orientation sessions relevant for the fieldwork

·         Organize, plan, and conduct in-depth interviews, focus group discussions, and participant observations under the supervision of the research lead

·         Conduct transcription and translation of IDI and FGD audio-records

·         Engage in quality assurance activities

·         Support the interpretation of findings

·         Undertake other activities duties, tasks or responsibilities related to the study as reasonably requested by the research team.

Duration of contract: 1 month (maximum duration)

Job Requirements

·         Master’s degree in public health, anthropology, nursing, midwifery or closely related health field. Applicants with related field of Master’s study who demonstrate extensive experience of qualitative research in areas related to this project can be considered

·         Applicants who are familiar with the local contexts of study sites will get priority

·         Proficiency in local languages will be highly desirable. Excellent oral and written communications skills in English is need.

·         Demonstrable qualitative research experience (e.g., conducting interviews and FGDs) and transcription and translation. Applicants with publications of their qualitative work will be given preference.

·         Able to use computers and basic software Microsoft Office,

·         Willing to travel to study sites and station there throughout the fieldwork conduct

·         Being able to speak and understand local language is preferred.
