Job Description

Background

JSI/IPHCSD and Amref health Africa are undertaking an implementation research to explore the drivers of home birth, and designing and delivering community-based packaged lifesaving maternal and newborn health interventions to improve maternal and newborn outcomes. The research will employ the following implementation strategies: 1) community-based distribution of life-saving interventions, 2) establishing and implementing participatory learning and action, and 3) strengthening the referral system and maternity waiting homes. The study will be implemented in two agrarian and two pastoralist woredas. We propose to conduct a formative research to establish a baseline and inform contextual adaptation of the community-based delivery of interventions and subsequent implementation research, including process and end-line evaluation to measure implementation intensity and effectiveness of implementation strategies on implementation outcomes.  The effectiveness of the implementation strategies in improving maternal and newborn health outcomes will be monitored and evaluated using the RE-AIM (reach, effectiveness, adoption, implementation, maintenance) framework and Consolidated Framework for Implementation research (CFIR).

The research will be conducted in selected pastoral regions i.e Afar and Somaili having high rate of home birth. The project received funding from Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF).

Currently, the project is intending to conduct a formative assessment in

·       Chifra woreda, in Afar region

·       Degahbur woreda, in Somali region

Therefore, this call is to hire experts who have competency in collecting quantitative and qualitative data as short-term consultants who will conduct the data collection and transcription under the technical lead of JSI/IPHCSD’s and Amref Health Africa M& E and Research team.

I.            Quantitative data collectors

Required number: 15   

Place of Work: Chifra woreda, in Afar region, Degahbur woreda, in Somali region

Duration: 25 days

Roles and Responsibilities:

·       Attend basic training on the data collection tools and systems

·       Pre-testing the questionnaire during the training

·       Together with the researchers and local guides develop travel plan

·       Conduct household survey with women using SurveyCTO with high quality

·       Synchronizing offline collected data every 48 hours

·       Conduct preliminary data analysis

·       Prepare report

·       Prepare field report

·       Taking good care of data collection device

Qualifications and experience:

v  Degree and above in public health, nurse or any related profession with more than five years of work experience.

v  Proven experience in qualitative and qualitative data collection (data collection, data cleaning, qualitative data analysis, transcription and write up).

v  Good expertise in using digital data collection tool particularly in SurveyCTO

v  Experience using data to support research efforts and strong levels of data literacy

v  Demonstrable ability to write reports or technical materials.

v  A clear understanding of the local community

v  Speaking and writing fluency in English, Amharic and Oromiffa depending on the region you applied for

v  Good interpersonal communication skills

II.           Qualitative data collectors

Required number:

Duration: 15 days

Roles and Responsibilities:

·       Attend basic training on the data collection guide and procedures

·       Pre-testing the guide during the training

·       Together with the researchers and local guides develop travel plan

·       Carry out in-depth interviews with women, program managers, service providers, and health extension workers

·       Record conversations and take field notes

·       Verbatim transcription of focus group discussions and in-depth to English

·       Conduct preliminary data analysis

·       Preliminary report 

·       Translate and transcribe from local languages into English

·       Taking good care of data collection device

Job Requirements

Qualifications and experience:

v  Degree and above in Public Health, Nurse or any related profession with more than five years of work experience.

v  Proven experience in qualitative data collection and preliminary analysis (data collection, transcription, translation, analysis and write up).

v  Good expertise in using digital tool for recording focus group discussion and in-depth interviews and verbatim transcription

v  Experience using qualitative data to support research efforts and strong levels of data literacy

v  Demonstrable ability to write reports or technical materials.

v  A clear understanding of the local community

v  Speaking and writing fluency in English, Amharic and Oromiffa depending on the region you applied for

v  Good interpersonal communication skills
