The World Vegetable Center (WorldVeg) seeks to hire a Research Officer I – Socio-Economics to assist in implementation of the USAID-funded project “Best practice guidelines for vegetable seed kit and irrigation interventions to support populations impacted by disaster in need of emergency crop support”  implemented by WorldVeg Ethiopia country office – Addis Ababa.

The World Vegetable Center (WorldVeg) is a non-profit, autonomous international agricultural research center with headquarters in Taiwan and five regional offices around the globe. Main Responsibilities:

  • Collect high-quality data: design study protocols; select, train and mentor qualified enumerators and field supervisors; and conduct questionnaire surveys with clear sampling strategies;

  • Analyze seed systems in Ethiopia with emphasis on vegetable seed;

  • Evaluate the effectiveness of alternative vegetable seed distribution models to farmers using quantitative and qualitative research methods;

  • Monitor the distribution of seed and other support to farmers using digital data collection tools

  • Organize workshops with stakeholders and project partners;

  • Coordinate the provision of technical support to project partners;

  • Contribute to the documentation of project activities, outputs and outcomes by writing reports, publications, brochures and guidelines;

  • Create partnerships and synergies with the private vegetable/horticulture sector, NGOs and government organizations;

  • Performs any other duties assigned by the supervisor.

Minimum Requirements:

Education:

  • Master’s degree in social science, agricultural economics, development economics or a related discipline.

Experience:

  • Minimum of three years of relevant work experience, preferably with an international non-governmental organization.

Skills:

  • Proven experience in conducting household surveys

  • Excellent computer skills in MS‐office applications and statistical software (STATA)

  • Proven experience in qualitative research in agricultural development, including study design, data collection, analysis and write up, and knowledge of a range of quantitative and qualitative research methods

  • Team player with excellent communication skills in spoken and written English

  • Good interpersonal skills and ability to interact with partners and colleagues in a multi- cultural setting.

Duty Station:   Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

Position level:   HG 13

Minimum Base salary:                  

  • Birr 37,575 per month (Negotiable depending on salary history of the candidate)
