Program Description:
The USAID-funded Ethiopia Civic Engagement Activity is a four-year activity with the overall goal to strengthen Ethiopia’s civic fabric in support of more inclusive, peaceful, and responsive governance. The project aims to strengthen civic and community-based actors’ capacity to engage in policy analysis, advocacy, dialogue, and collective action for peaceful, democratic change; and foster multi-stakeholder civic partnerships in support of inclusive dialogue, respect for human rights, and advancing more effective, citizen-responsive, and accountable governance.
Position Summary:
This is a call for applications for local consultants with experience in transcribing oral recordings to support the implementation of an Applied Political Economy Analysis (APEA) for the Ethiopia Civic Engagement (ECE) project. The data transcribers will work with a team of local consultants, and Ethiopia Civic Engagement (ECE) staff to transcribe interviews for the development of a problem-based APEA. The APEA will have a national and regional scope in Addis Ababa and other two regional Hubs. The transcriber’s responsibilities include creating accurate written versions of audio recordings, reviewing, and editing transcriptions done by speech recognition software, and identifying any inconsistencies. The data transcriber should have a good typing speed and superb attention to detail and be able to keep all sensitive information confidential. The transcribe should be able to translate any interviews done in Amharic (or other relevant languages) into English.
Reporting: MEL/ CLA Director
Understanding client specifications and noting any formatting or notation requests prior to completing the transcription.
Completing transcriptions in a timely manner and reviewing drafts for any spelling, grammar, or formatting errors, as well as other inconsistencies.
Translate from Amharic (or other relevant language) into English
Verbatim transcription of focus group discussions and in-depth to English
Adhering to all confidential guidelines and respecting sensitive information.
Showing up on time for scheduled meetings.
Communicating with the client or supervisor when there are issues.
Submitting completed drafts and correcting any errors as per their feedback.
Transferring data from paper formats into computer files or database systems
Other duties as assigned.
University degree, preferably in linguistics or social science fields
Proven experience transcribing verbal recordings, preferably on the same assignments at least two recommendations
Should be disciplined and have excellent listening skills.
Outstanding candidates have superb reading and editing skills and the ability to focus for long periods.
Proficiency in MS Office, Express Scribe, and other software.
A good typing speed and excellent reading skills.
A high degree of professionalism and a superb work ethic.
Detail-oriented and deadline-driven.
Fluency in English and Amharic is required. Applicants with fluency in other Ethiopian languages are encouraged to apply.
