Médecins du Monde (MDM) is operating in Ethiopia since 1986 in different types of health projects. MDM–France invites qualified candidates to apply for the following position:

Position Title: Social Worker, CDCS Project /Afar

Duty station: The Social Worker will be based at Yalo, Afar Region  

Employment Term: 10 Months with possibility of extension 

Basic Salary: 23,040.00 ETB

Reported to:  He/ She works under the supervision of the Deputy Program Manager

Job Summary

Under the direct supervision of the Deputy Program manager and working in close collaboration with the MHPSS officer, the Social Worker will assist in the linkage of GBV and MHPSS patients with protection needs. This will include linking of GBV cases, advocacy on behalf of clients according to their needs, referrals and systematic follow ups, accompaniment as well as overall case coordination.

Essential duties and responsibilities. 

  • Responsible to design, plan and implement outreach/community mobilization activities in target area in coordination with other team members.

  • Mobilize and facilitate the engagements of community stakeholders through appropriate outreach mechanisms.

  • Undertake information dissemination in a timely and understandable manner to all stakeholders: IDPs, Host communities.

  • Facilitate active participation of the communities in planning, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of community development initiatives.

  • Support the collection and documentation of impact and success stories on monthly, quarterly, semiannual, and annually.

  • In close collaboration with other MDM-FR team members, contribute to design the community-based strategy and action plan for outreach activities.

  • Promote and install sense of ownership among the beneficiaries through community engagement activities or design appropriate activities for the enhanced beneficiaries’ involvement.

  • Organize and participate in all project events related to mother and child health (BEmONC, IMNCI, Nutrition Screening and vaccination campaigns, GBV, FGM) outbreak focused on COVID19 during campaigns, consultations with communities, etc.).

  • Organize awareness rising and sensitization sessions on the importance of ANC, PNC, delivery by skilled birth attendants, GBV, FGM, IMNCI, FP and Covid19 prevention, vaccine and MIYCN.

  • Support Health technical officers in planning of social mobilization and training activities as needed.

  • Support the referral linkage of Life saving referrals, SAM cases to OTP, GBV and other mental illness from the community to the supported health facilities .

Provide survivor-cantered management to GBV clients and MHPSS patients with protection needs:

  • Provide GBV psychoeducation to clients as well as other key information regarding MDM services and other services available in the community. 

  • Provide internal and external referrals and follow-up services to clients according to their needs.

  • Support clients to navigate complex administrative systems and advocate on their behalf with healthcare, police and security forces, the legal and justice system, and other services as required;

  • Ensure services being provided to clients are well coordinated at every level and with every other service provider.

  • Identify and respond to clients’ arising needs and work in very close collaboration with the MHPSS and PHC teams to ensure clients’ psycho-social support and other needs are well met.

  • Work in close collaboration with MHPSS to update referral pathways and systems between community and PHC actors.

  • Ensure all work with clients is confidential and that ethical practices are observed in culturally appropriate way, especially with respect to gender sensitivities.

Keep accurate and up-to date records

  • Record all interventions with clients through the drafting of timely and well-written session notes.

  • Maintain complete and safely kept client files.

  • Periodically assess progress of individual cases linked to health facilities and respond accordingly.

Sensitize communities on health GBV and MHPSS related issues as well as MDM services in the IDP and host communities:

  • Support MDM community mobilisers in conducting awareness raising on GBV risks / consequences and PSS related issues and MDM’s services.

  • Deliver strategic health talk in the clinics together with MHPSS and Medical team.

Provide and facilitate psycho-social support activities for the IDP community and host population, with focus on delivering GBV specific PSS services at the clinics and community level

  • Plan and conduct group activities for GBV survivors and other women that focus on support groups, sessions with children, group’s discussion, and community reintegration; using participatory methods adapted activities in accordance to the needs of the different target groups (children, women, etc.);

Meetings and reporting

  • Weekly reporting activities and data collection;

  • Share data at the end of every month with deputy program manager

  • Participate in regular case management meetings with other MDM social workers and Social workers from other organizations in the areas of intervention or nearby Woredas;

  • Participation in MDM internal meetings 

  • Attend monthly clinical supervision meeting with MHPSS coordinator

  • Inform security focal point in the case of any safety/security/protection problem.

Job Requirements

Educational Qualification

  • MSC /BSC Degree in community health, social work, Sociology, or related fields.

Work Experience

  •  At least 2 years of working experience on community, social work in health care setting in emergency situations.

  • At least two-year experience in similar positions.

  • Experience with other NGO is a plus.
