Microbiologists study and research the life forms, characteristics, and processes of microscopic organisms. They study microorganisms such as bacteria, protozoa, fungi, etc. in order to diagnose and counteract the effects that these microorganisms might have in animals, in the environment, in the food industry, or in the health care industry.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Ensure microbial safety of products and raw materials is as the standard;

• Develop microbial testing procedure that meets the regulatory requirements in Ethiopia and global guidelines for microbial testing.

• Implement the lab safety procedures at all phases of the production process;

• Positive release of every finished goods batch with regard to microbial safety;

• Maintain a record of tests and results for all raw materials and finished goods;

• Conducting tests to evaluate new processing methods or equipment that could improve the safety of products;

• Ensure preparation of all microbiological media, diluents, reagents, supplements, etc., as required for testing purposes;

• Conduct mock incident management drills for our products;

• Ensure adherence to health and safety guidelines as well as legal obligations;

• Inspect final output and compare properties against its requirements;

• Properly approve the right products or reject defectives;

• Keep accurate documentation and perform statistical analysis;

• Submit detailed reports to appropriate members of the management team;

• Play key role in continuous improvement of procedure in the plant;

• Conduct hygiene induction and training for new and existing employees;

• Advice management on disposal of the rejected materials that fail micro tests;

• Develop and deploy procedure for handling biological culture during storage, usage and disposal;

• Participates in and promotes continuous improvement efforts within the laboratory functions and operations;

• Advises line management and assists with the implementation of new or existing microbial safety-related legislation, rules and standards;

• Perform other duties assigned by your supervisor

Requirements

Academic qualification

• BA in Microbiology, Biochemistry or related fields

Additional qualifications

• Strong planning, organizational skills and attention to detail;

  • Skills in handling microbial testing equipment, reagent and kits.

  • Technical proficiency must be able to use computers and generate reports.

  • Willingness to assist other departments to develop solutions and metrics;

  • Self-motivated, result-oriented, and have a positive team spirit;

  • Highly developed analytical and problem-solving skill

Years of experience: Minimum 5+ years’ experience as a microbiologist
