About our organization:

The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH is a global service provider in the field of international cooperation for sustainable development dedicated to shaping a future worth living around the world. As a public-benefit federal enterprise, GIZ supports the German Government – in particular the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) – and many public and private sector clients in achieving their objectives in international cooperation in around 120 countries.

Since 2004, GIZ has been a reliable and trusted partner of the African Union (AU) to enhance inclusive growth and sustainable development on the African continent in line with the AU’s Agenda 2063: The Africa We Want. With more than 200 staff, GIZ African Union cooperates with the AU Commission, as well as the AU’s specialised institutions and agencies, such as the Development Agency AUDA-NEPAD, at continental, regional and national level in more than 35 member states. Key areas of engagement include Peacebuilding and Conflict Prevention, Governance and Migration, Sustainable Economic Growth and Employment, as well as Health and Social Development.

The GIZ African Union Office headquartered in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, with further staff based in South Africa, Ghana, and Germany provides services and support in the areas of procurement, financial management, events and travel, human resources, internal operations, communication, and portfolio management to all GIZ programmes and projects that are implemented in partnership with the African Union.

Description of the Project:

The Tana High Level Forum on Security in Africa is an independent initiative of the Institute for Peace and Security Studies (IPSS), of the Addis Ababa University, the African Union and of eminent African personalities, including the late Prime Minister Meles Zenawi. The Forum is a response to the Tripoli Declaration of the AU Summit in August 2009 that calls for “African-centred solutions” and designates peace and security as a collective “intellectual challenge”.

The Tana Forum brings together African leaders, personalities and stakeholders to engage and explore African-led security solutions. The Forum complements the statutory formal meetings between African heads of states and governments by assembling them in an informal and collaborative environment. These meetings are complemented by panel discussions, interaction on the floor, and bilateral talks to share views and experiences in a time efficient, results-oriented and open manner. The maiden Tana High-level Forum took place on 14-15 April 2012 in Bahir Dar, Ethiopia and its 11th edition takes place this October.

GIZ supports the Tana High-Level Forum on Security in Africa as part of the German Federal Republic’s engagement in the area of crisis prevention and peace mediation in Africa. The Tana Forum project is part of the GIZ African Union Portfolio and contributes to the convening of the annual Tana Forum, its complementary dialogue formats as well as the strategic development of the Forum.

  • Provide technical inputs into content development and strengthen impact monitoring for the Tana Forum and its regional events.

  • Contribute to the development of innovative tools and products to strengthen the communication and visibility of the Forum and its engagement platforms.

  • Maintain a close cooperation with the partner for operational and financial planning as well as the implementation of activities.
