The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) Delegation in Ethiopia is looking to hire an experienced, highly motivated and qualified person to fill the position of Truck Driver based in Addis Ababa.
Term of employment - fixed term contract until 31st December 2023 with the possibility of extension based on budget to be available for the position.
GENERAL DUTIES
Understands and adheres to the seven Fundamental Principles of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement
Understands and adheres to the ICRC Code of Conduct
Understands the roles of the components of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement
Respects and observes staff regulations and security rules at all times
Represents the ICRC in a professional manner at all times
Develops and maintains a pleasant and conducive working environment with colleagues and line managers
Performs all duties with the highest level of confidentiality in the interest of the employees and the ICRC
May be asked to perform tasks not covered in this job description and to provide support to other departments when necessary
ACCOUNTABILITIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Transport
Transports ICRC cargo to and from different parts of the country
Fills in logbook correctly after every trip Security
Informs Truck Dispatcher about time of departure and return to the base
Makes sure that vehicle is parked in safe area all the time
Is aware of, and reacts to current security situations
Respects ICRC internal security rules all times
Respects the laws in general and traffic regulations in particular
Use the safety belt and remind passenger to use it
Drives only ICRC goods and personnel in ICRC vehicles unless instructed differently by superior
Fills Waiver of liability when transporting non-ICRC passenger
Fills in relevant field trip and other forms
Avoids using mobile phones while driving and respects radio communication procedures
Is aware of the rules concerning correct use of vehicle, and carriage of passengers and goods
Fuel
Ensures that the truck is always refueled before parking at the end of the trip
Drives in a manner that minimizes fuel consumption and maintains vehicle in good condition
Fills in Logbook and report if any correctly with all relevant data for each trip.
Handovers complete documentation to dispatcher at the end of the week.
Load responsibility
Drives in a manner that will not damage cargo
When applicable, ensures that custom and ICRC seals are intact
Is present at the loading and unloading of goods and confirms that the quantity corresponds with relevant documentation
Is responsible for goods documentation
During unloading, presents documentation of the goods to the receiver to be signed and returns it to dispatcher or Warehouse responsible
Participates in loading and unloading if needed
General
Drives in safe, responsible and accident free manner
Adapts the way of driving to the weather and road conditions
Reports to dispatcher about road conditions, eventual problems etc.
Reports vehicle accidents immediately using appropriate forms (including minor scratches)
Checks the mechanical condition of the truck before trips: fluid levels, wheels, tyres, lights, inspects for eventual leaking of fuel and oil
Checks vehicle equipment upon each handover and once a week
Maintains the truck interior clean at all times
Is able to change tyre, bulb and to make small repair on the road if needed
Is responsible for equipment, tools, chains, spare tyres placed in the truck and reports any changes to dispatcher
Informs dispatcher about service, maintenance and other possible repairs needed at least 3 days in advance
During the trips, monitors all cabin instruments to be able to promptly react if needed
Assists driver colleagues in case of breakdown
Checks that all vehicle documentations are correct and on board, as well as non-filled Waiver of Responsibility and Handover form.
When required, acts as translator/FO for the delegate
ADDITIONAL DUTIES
Checks that trips have been authorized where necessary.
Immediately reports accidents, defects and/or missing equipment to management.
an act as head of convoy as needed (in charge of the driver(s), application of security rules and timeframe for the convoy).
Minimum Certification / Education Required
High school graduate
Driving license 5th grade
Capacity to use HF / VHF radio communication devices is an asset
Good command of spoken English languages
Professional Experience Required
Minimum of 3 years’ work experience in a similar function with good record in INGOs & NGOs
Basic mechanical skills
Ability to change a tyre and carry out other minor repairs (e.g. change light bulbs) on the road
