Position: Emergency Health Officer

Place of Work: Adet, Naeder, Tahtay Maychew, Tanqua Milash and Abergelle Yechilla, Ethiopia

Deadline: October, 01/2023

Duty Station:

Duration of Contract:

  • One-year contract, renewable (with 60 working days of Probation)

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Nutrition officer will be responsible for the successful planning, and implementation of the JEOP emergency nutrition program at the AP level. The position holder will coordinate technical training to staff and stakeholders at the woreda level in nutrition screening, active case detection, early referral and admission of acute malnutrition cases through routine nutrition screening and Growth Monitoring and Promotion (GMP) programs. He/she will report to the AP manager and to be based at the woreda level.

Principal Responsibilities

Key Result #1 – Implementation and Coordination

  • Plan and implement detailed activities as per the approved annual operation plan.

  • Carryout planned activities in close collaboration with relevant community volunteers and government stakeholders

  • Organize, facilitate and provide technical training including screening, and management of MAM and SAM, referral linking, ENA, and EHA, care group model, etc.

  • Represent FHE in district-level nutrition technical working groups and task forces.

  • Identify the need of local health facilities to run standardized emergency nutrition services.

  • Closely work with the logistic team on the timely procurement of items needed for OTP and SC center support.

  • Ensure SBCC materials are printed and distributed to each FDP.

  • Ensure Target PLWs are attending RFSA care group sessions.

  • Collaborate with HEWs and RFSA team to improve project participants' access to nutrition/EHA education sessions offered at village levels.

  • Coordinate with kebele health structures and HEW/HDA to facilitate JEOP participants’ attendance at nutrition education sessions

  • Take part in designing nutrition and hygiene messages as per area context and translate in to local languages.

  • Organize sessions for nutrition message transmission via available and appropriate media outlets at distribution sites

Key Result #2 –Monitoring, Reporting and partnership/networking

  • Organize joint monitoring visits to each health facility and assess services provided to active cases.

  • Take part in joint mapping exercise (with ENCU) to identify main bottlenecks in emergency nutrition programming.

  • Make sure that project performance is on budget, scope and time.

  • Take part in the entire process of nutrition surveys and different assessments.

  • Organize regular review and consultative meetings with relevant community and government counterparts at district and zonal levels.

  • Conduct weekly data tracking of SC and OTP admissions, discharges and referrals and report to HO for analysis

  • Take part in on-the-spot assessment and case identification process of health-related outbreaks, and hunger in collaboration with the local health office.

Education and Experience

  • BA Degree in Nursing, Public Health Officer, and related fields.

  • 3 years related work experience in a relevant position Preferably in INGO Setting

  • Familiar with SBCC programs and have ample experience in managing behavioral change-related programs on nutrition, and hygiene at the community level.

  • Required to have ample experience in managing emergency nutrition-specific projects.

Language

  • Basic Proficiency in both spoken and written English and local languages.

Distinguishing Competencies

  •  Interested in working with communities in need of humanitarian assistance.

  • High level of professional discipline.

  •  Highly committed to serving communities in very challenging places with limited access to basic services.

  • Excellent computer skills and knowledge in the areas of MS Word, MS Excel, PowerPoint and email communication.

  • Have an in-depth understanding of national nutrition policies and strategies.

  • Be able to describe how gender issues relate to one’s job responsibilities and how gender equity can be promoted through the execution of those responsibilities.

  • Be familiar with the local Gender Focal Point(s), and go to her/him to learn more about gender issues, or when there is a gender grievance or harassment issue to resolve

  • Within each project and department, discuss FH’s Gender & Diversity and Sexual Harassment and sexual exploitation Policies, so that all staff are conversant with them.

  • Refrain from any comments or gestures that indicate prejudicial views of female staff, especially female supervisors.

  • In each Project and Head Office, ask women staff what changes would make it a more “gender-friendly”, organization and implement the recommendations
