Amref is the largest African-based international non-governmental organization (NGO). Amref has increased sustainable health access across Africa by engaging in programme development, fundraising, and partnership through our European and North American offices. Amref has been active in Ethiopia since the 1960s and became fully operational in 2002.
Job Summary
We are looking to hire a dedicated Communications Officer to join our team. The communications officer will support our internal and external communications strategy development and implementation, write and disseminate publicity materials, support events production at national and regional level where our projects are implemented, respond to inquiries from the public and media, and coordinate development, reviewing, printing and dissemination of the organizations’ promotional materials and events. To succeed as a communications officer, you should be able to think creatively, and have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, excellent writing and events documentation skills. A bachelor's degree with experience as a communications officer or equivalent experience in a similar role is strongly desired.
· Collate, write, edit and distribute contents, including publications, press releases, website content, annual reports, speeches, and other marketing material that communicates Amref’s activities.
· Draft and organize social media content to promote Amref Health Africa in Ethiopia blogs, videos and media coverage on Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and other social media platforms.
· Collaborate with management to develop and implement an effective communications strategy based on our target audience.
· Respond to media inquiries, arrange interviews, and act as a spokesperson for the organization.
· Establish and maintain effective relationships with journalists and maintain a media database.
· Seek opportunities to enhance the reputation of the Amref brand, and coordinate publicity events as required.
· Maintain records of media coverage and collate analytics and metrics.
· Draft talking points for sharing with both internal and external audiences.
· Undertake and organize field trips with media and other official visitors in support of Amref Ethiopia and its work, working in coordination with program and project communicators.
· Produce and encourage field communications staff to produce strategic and general interest news and features content for dissemination to external audiences via online channels including Amref's.
· Support in organizing Amref country office and project level events, including partners’ events, preparing and following up events calendars, capturing the events in writing, photos and videos for web and social media sharing.
· Ensure Amref’s visibility, reputation, and positioning as the leading authority on health through strong spokesperson presence and effective media relations.
· Work closely with the Communications Manager to support project teams and colleagues in the country program in developing communication and outreach materials that tell the impact of Amref’s work, raise the Amref profile, attract and engage diverse audiences, including donors, partners, national and local governments, media and the public.
· Support program teams in developing outreach materials related to the implementation of Amref projects and activities, such as but not limited to briefers, brochures, fact sheets, banners, event and training materials, information, education and promotional products.
· Review project communications and ensure these are aligned with Amref’s brand strategy and consistent with Amref’s brand and publication guidelines and donor requirements.
· Coordinate, design, and produce a variety of communications products including quarterly newsletters, multimedia products, training solutions, and other digital outputs, follow up the development and printing of these materials.
· Provide broad communications support including website maintenance, content creation and curation, editorial support, and strategic messaging.
· Work closely with the M&E and program team on how to better generate, capture, synthesize and share knowledge with youth at the center, through a wide range of communication medium; to ensure that success stories and scientific publications are prepared and disseminated broadly;
· Facilitate communication and use of knowledge sharing and learning products to the Amref members and closely work with program, and external entities,
· Support in the documentation of best practices and success stories, and ensure on-going learning and adapting;
· Work with project technical on communicating events such as launchings, disseminations workshops, review meetings, field visits by developing the messages, press release and brochures appropriate for each event;
· In collaboration with the program M&E team and technical leads, initiate or accompany field visits to intervention areas to collect quality photos, quotes, and materials suitable for success stories and use in the communications work;
· Degree in Communications, International Relations or related fields.
Experience
· Minimum 5 (five) years of relevant experience.
· Good understanding of needs of media and public audiences.
· Social media skills.
· Proficiency in English.
· Excellent communications and public speaking skills.
· Excellent writing skills and should be able to compose engaging and accurate content/stories.
· Strong communicator who works well independently and with a team.
· Knowledge and skills of face-to-face and virtual events’ production.
· Superior time management skills and the ability to juggle multiple projects simultaneously.
· Knowledge and skills of photo-taking and video shooting and editing skills.
· Knowledge of Adobe Photoshop, InDesign and Illustrator is an asset.
· Ability to think strategically and identify ways to improve communication efforts.
· Problem solver.
· Must be resourceful and take initiative even when given minimal direction.
