Job Description
Background
The chemistry laboratory technician assists researchers with chemical processing and testing. He/she works in labs, conduct experiments, test compounds, and analysing substances and data. He/she also writes reports and troubleshoots equipment and maintains the laboratory neat, clean and safe. He/she must be passionate about research, development, and science. Outstanding candidates have an in-depth knowledge of chemistry and good observational and analytical skills.
Main Responsibilities and Duties
Understanding and following the instructions and specifications of scientists and researchers.
Selecting and setting up the required lab equipment for tests, experiments, and analyses.
Conducting lab tests for qualitative and quantitative analyses of various substances and materials.
Assisting with the preparation of chemical solutions.
Keeping the laboratory neat and clean and sterilizing all work surfaces and equipment. Cleaning up after each lab work by washing, and if necessary, sterilizing tools, equipment, and supplies
Regularly inspecting materials and equipment and ordering more as required.
Working alongside other researchers and scientists to develop improved production processes and methods.
Interpreting test results and compiling technical reports.
Keeping up-to-date with field advancements and sharing new knowledge with colleagues.
Performing laboratory experiments in compliance with established procedures.
Identify and troubleshoot equipment issues.
Maintaining laboratory equipment and tools in clean, safe and good conditions.
Following preventive maintenance procedures and notify maintenance personnel on any equipment repairs and malfunctions.
Generating routine reports on laboratory experiments.
Conducting laboratory tests according to equipment specifications and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
Evaluating chemicals and equipment for suitability, cost, availability, and other factors.
Developing new laboratory procedures or enhancements to improve test quality and productivity.
Inventory, order and stock laboratory supplies, reagents and instruments.
Maintaining expenditure records and providing data for budget estimates.
Following proper waste disposal and recycling methodologies. Monitoring production of, collecting, and processes hazardous waste materials and toxic chemical materials resulting from lab classes; collecting and properly storing hazardous waste.
Working with Supervisor in resolving experiment and equipment related issues in a timely fashion.
Providing instruction to students and researchers in proper use and care of laboratory materials and equipment; assists in maintaining security of laboratories, laboratory equipment, supplies, and materials.
Training less experienced staffs on SOPs and equipment usage.
Performing related duties as required.

Terms and conditions
Salary: Negotiable depending on qualifications and experience
Terms of Employment: Full-time and Post subject to 6-month contract renewal.
Hours of work and holidays are governed by the laws of Ethiopia. However, the nature of the work is such that it might require working overtime and weekends, with due financial compensation
Qualifications
BSc in chemistry with experience in working in chemistry laboratory, quality control units and the like.
Excellent knowledge of lab safety.
Knowledge of computer science and statistics is a plus.
Strong analytical, observational, and time management skills.
The ability to follow instructions and focus for extended periods.
Passionate about research, development, and science.
Strong communication skills and ability to work with interdisciplinary groups.
