We are currently seeking to fill the position of environmental and social expert with a candidate who is competent, motivated, and passionate about developing environmental management system plan and social safeguarding. This position is an ideal opportunity for a candidate with a minimum ten years of experience who is eager to be involved in all aspects of environmental and social safeguarding.

Position Summary:  

Environmental and social safeguarding expert is responsible for analyzing and advising on the impact of various activities on the environment and society. This role involves conducting assessments, gathering data, and providing recommendations to minimize negative effects and maximize positive outcomes. The expert collaborates with stakeholders, including government agencies, businesses, and local communities, to ensure that projects and initiatives are carried out in a sustainable and socially responsible manner. They may in developing and implementing strategies to promote environmental conservation, social justice, and community engagement. The environmental and social expert plays a crucial role development and addressing environmental and social challenges.

Main Duties and Activities:  

  • The Environmental and social expert will be responsible for: 

  • Develop an Environmental and Social Management System and related management plans, as recommended in the environmental and social management plan.  

  • Ensure adequate risk identification, management and reporting and act as the focal point for coordination, implementation and monitoring and documentation of the environmental and social management plan, the land acquisition and resettlement action plan and its corrective action plan, and delegate specific tasks as needed to the rest of the project team.

  • Prepare and submit a monitoring and reporting plan for environmental and social management plan implementation. 

  • Prepare and submit a monitoring and reporting plan for land acquisition and resettlement plan implementation, 

  • In coordination with the project database specialist, prepare the monthly implementation reports and quarterly monitoring reports. 

  • Communicate any incident or accident to the Project manager which has, or is likely to have, a significant adverse effect on the environment, the affected communities, the public or workers including the risks specified in the environmental and social assessment within 48 hours

  • Define an inspections program in accordance with environmental and social management plan requirements. 

  • Define a corrective and preventive actions process; 

  • Perform inspections in accordance with inspections program; 

  • Provide for a specific grievance mechanism for all contracted workers and, where relevant, their organizations, to raise work-place concerns; 

  • Ensure information of workers about the grievance mechanism at the time of recruitment and about the measures put in place to protect them against any reprisal for its use.

  • Continuously monitor the risks and impacts to the community arising from the project activities; 

  •  Develop and implement measures to address emergency events and ensure coordination with relevant stakeholders; 

  • Adopt and implement the traffic and road safety monitoring and management measures throughout the project implementation. 

Compensation: Highly competitive.

Reporting to: Program Coordinator/JaRco Director 

Employment Type: Full time one year contract

Job Requirements

Required Credentials and Competencies:

  • Advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in Environmental Science, Resource/Environmental Economics, Natural Resources Management or relevant scientific discipline in social sciences; 

  • A minimum of 10 years of extensive working experience in Environment and Social Safeguards, with an active involvement in international environment and social safeguard application; 

  • At least 5 years of working experience in implementing Environmental and Social Management Plans on large infrastructure projects. 

  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills required.

  • Fluency in spoken and written English and Amharic.
