JOB SUMMARY:

We are seeking a skilled and detail-oriented copy editor to join our editorial team. As a copy editor, you will be responsible for reviewing and revising content for accuracy and quality. You will work closely with our team to ensure all content adheres to our organization's guidelines and is published in a timely manner. In addition to editing for accuracy and quality, you will also be expected to ensure that the content is engaging and well-structured.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • The successful candidate shall work closely with the Editor-in-Chief and the editorial team to ensure the content of the stories conforms to the company’s editorial policies.

  • S/he ensures that the house style is adhered to by writing, rewriting, editing, and proofreading breaking news, feature stories, interviews, and commentaries.

  • The candidates shall check facts and claims to ensure they are accurate, free from copyright laws infringement, and not libellous.

  • The copy editor ensures that stories are the right length and correctly placed on each page, section of the website, and other digital platforms such as mobile apps.

  • S/he composes headlines that capture the essence of the story, adds, writes, and edits captions for photos, videos, and illustrations.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Ability to work under pressure and to tight deadlines; excellent knowledge of grammar and punctuation; news savvy; an understanding of the law relating to publishing and journalism ethics; as well as meticulous attention to detail. Excellent oral and written communication skills, familiarity with content management systems (CMS), and prior reporting experience are a plus.

  • The successful applicant must have a minimum of an undergraduate degree in English, communications, journalism, creative writing, or a related field.

  • Two years’ experience in content/copy editing, preferably for publication as a journalist, in particular as a sub-editor with Strong writing and editing skills and prior experience working as a digital journalist are a plus.

  • Willingness to work late nights and irregular hours to meet deadlines.

  • Ability to adapt to a flexible work schedule that may include evenings, weekends, and holidays.
