Job Description

Friendship Support Association (FSA) is a local NGO working in Afar Regional State. The organization is seeking to recruit highly motivated and qualified candidate for CR WASH project vacant post.

JOB SUMMARY: 

The Gender and Community Coordinator will provide direct technical support to the CR WASH activity subcontracted by RTI to ensure equal opportunities and representation for girls and women with that of boys and men. The coordinator will provide technical support to mainstream gender across the CR WASH activities in Afar regional state. S/he will ensure gender is integrated into all aspects of the project management framework, strengthening and supporting gender equality strategies and facilitating gender equality capacity strengthening for CR WASH via training and tool development. S/he is required to ensure program are gender sensitive and provide technical advice on how to make the CR WASH activity become gender transformative.

 MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND TASKS: 

  • In line with the CR WASH Gender mainstreaming approach, lead the development of FSA’s gender strategy especially for the CR WASH activities.

  • Serve as the technical focal person for CR WASH gender mainstreaming approach and implementation of the same.

  • Supervise gender related assessments and evidence generation initiatives of the CR WASH to formulate key gender messages and targets during the course of the project implementation. 

  • Contribute to the design and implementation of project activities and initiatives encompassing a wide range of issues with a gender lens.

  • Ensure that the project beneficiary information is compiled in a way that it is disaggregated by sex from the basis of all key CR WASH activities.

  • Collect secondary data/information and interpret to understand key gender issues in the region particularly in the CR WASH geographic location focusing on gender dynamic and adapt strategies as necessary.

  • Build capacity of key stakeholders and project staffs and community volunteers including WASHCO members on gender.

  • Keep watching any gender related issues at the regional level regarding gender policy and strategy, engagement of policy makers and other key players and to identify opportunities and threats to raise awareness on gender.

  • Develop strategy to influence the gender dynamics and key decision-making structures of the community to enhance women participation in local initiatives. 

  • Maintain a strong relationship with other Gender related platforms, forums and protection cluster to get timely updates of the sector.

  • Represent and act as a spokesperson for CR WASH on gender issues various policy forums and advocacy opportunities at regional and local levels.

  • Produce reports, briefing papers and presentations for internal and external audiences, as directed.

  • Write regular progress reports, including annual gender impact monitoring reports.

  • Adhere to the organization's safeguarding policy and code of conduct to ensure that the target community is not harmed.

Job Requirements

  • BA degree in Sociology, Gender Studies, Anthropology, Social Studies or other related field of studies  

  • Minimum of 4 years of related experience in gender mainstreaming and empowerment preferably in NGO or Government organizations.

  • Proven knowledge of the gender policy in Ethiopia.

  • Ability to liaison and work closely with local administrators, government, NGOs and agencies operating in the project geographic location in relation to gender issues. 

  • Strong communication, persuasion, negotiation and training skills. 

  • Capacity to work collaboratively in a team and ability to operate independently. 

  • High adaptation skills to different contexts and actors.

  • Computer literacy in MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

  • Knowledge of local language is required.

  • Ability to identify and plan work strategically and meeting deadlines.

  • Ability to train other and provide technical guidance to support field staff.

  • Good in oral and written communication skills.

  • Proven experience of high-level report writing.

  • Previous relevant experience in the NGO sector is an asset.
