Job Description

The Johns Hopkins Center for Communication Programs (CCP) is conducting an implementation research project to develop and test strategies/solutions that optimize uptake of ANC and institutional delivery (ID), and IFA supplementation among pregnant women, with funding and support from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. The project is being implemented in Sirraro and Shalla woredas in Oromia region. CCP has created an internship opportunity for up to 8 recent graduates who will learn about social and behavior change interventions as they support the implementation in the above target woredas in of Oromia region.

Detailed Activities during the Internship

  • Attend orientation session for the selected internship holders on the project approach, strategy and tools

  • Internalize the prototype solutions, tools developed for Hadga Gerree and facilitate the orientation workshop with the team.

  • Attend trainings organized by CCP, for service providers and Hadhaa Gerees

  • Work with the Primary Health Care Units (PHCUs) and in particular Heath Extension Workers (HEWs) to support and provide on-site follow up for the Hadhaa Gerree in the assigned woredas and catchments.

  • Travel to kebles and visit Hadhaa Garees in their community at least three times in a week and produce relevant log reports.

  • Visit the pregnant women household, together with the Hadhaa Gerree when needed.

  • Support the HEWs in the assigned kebeles to facilitate and conduct monthly meetings of Hadhaa Geree in the keble level.  

  • Support Hadhaa Geree in implementation of selected prototypes and make sure proper documentation of the report from each visit.

  • Document best practices in the community in relation to the implementation research.

  • Compile and submit monthly reports to JHU/CCP office on the project implementation as well as their learning. 

Benefits

  • CCP will provide a mentor working with the selected interns and limited stipend to cover costs of transport and food.

  • Payment US$250 per month

Job Requirements

Required qualification & skills

Essential (must have):

  • First degree in health, nutrition, sociology literature or other related social science fields.

  • Reading, writing and speaking fluency in both Afaan Oromo and Amharic languages.

  • Comfortable working with rural community, in particular, vulnerable mothers and their husbands

Preferable (useful to have):

  • Familiarity with the study Woreda/s or willingness to relocate and reside (no relocation allowance is offered).

  • Appropriately qualified female applicants have distinct advantage.

  • Previous experience of any health-related activity in the community (can be volunteer activity)
