The International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT) seeks to recruit a Technical Assistant III to assist in conducting field experiments and nursery activities.

The International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT) is an autonomous, non-profit making, international scientific organization operating under the aegis of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR). More specifically its mission is to encourage, support and undertake activities to improve the productivity, profitability, and sustainability of maize and wheat systems in the interest of the resource poor in developing countries.

Main duties & responsibilities:

Ensure timely and proper and execution of field activities for trials and nurseries (land preparation to harvesting);

  • Record data from lab and field trials, seed multiplication, and related activities planted at the phenotyping site;

  • Monitor pest attacks and report to concerned CIMMYT-Ethiopia staff /supervisor and ensure appropriate pest control measures are taken;

  • Based on the seasonal activity schedule, coordinate with MARC to ensure timely supply of farm machinery and equipment needed for all field operations, and diligently record delivery of goods and services;

  • Collaborate with other partners and stakeholders operating at the station to ensure fair and proper use and maintenance of shared resources and services, such as guarding, water pumps, water reservoir, etc.;

  • Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor;

Labor management:

  • Assist in developing monthly labor plan and raise weekly labor requests for approval;

  • Coordinate CIMMYT labor requests to MARC and support the recruitment process;

  • Supervise and control daily laborers recruited for all manually executed activities towards increasing quality performance and labor productivity;

  • Take attendance of daily laborers and follow up submission of time sheet for the supervisor;

  • Maintain diligent records of all labor employed;

  • Follow all applicable labor management and HR protocols and regulations, as may be established and communicated by CIMMYT and/or MARC.

Use and maintenance of the irrigation system;

  • Ensure the availability of irrigation water in the reservoir;

  • Responsible for careful and timely installation, removal, and storage of drip-tapes;

  • Implement a proper irrigation schedule for field experiments and nurseries;

Phenotyping site management:

  • Ensure proper use and maintenance of moisture profiling probes; record and compile moisture probe data;

  • Ensure proper functioning and maintenance of the weather station;

  • Compile and request supplies and services needed for executing trials and nurseries, and prudently manage the inventory of supplies with a high degree of integrity and in compliance with CIMMYT procedures;

  • Monitor utility bills for the site and ensure their timely payment in coordination with the responsible CIMMYT administrative staff;

  • Monitor day and night guards to help ensure site security.

Minimum Requirements:

Education and Experience:

  • High school certificate plus certificate in relevant field and three years relevant experience

Or

  • Diploma in relevant field with one year relevant experience

  • Knowledge in relevant field and use of simple tools and equipment

Skills:

  • Field experimentation techniques

  • Field data collection management using digital tools

  • Basic computer skills with good knowledge of Microsoft Office applications (especially Excel

Duty Station:     Melkassa, Ethiopia

Position level:   HG 09

Minimum Base salary:  Birr 18,121 per month (negotiable depending on salary history of the candidate)

Terms of appointment: This is a National Staff (NS) position, initial appointment is for two years with the possibility of renewal, contingent upon individual performance and the availability of funding.
