Job Description

Position: Researcher II

Location: Armauer Hansen Research Institute (AHRI)

Background: The Armauer Hansen Research Institute (AHRI) was founded in 1970 as a non-governmental organization through the initiative of the Norwegian and Swedish Save the Children organizations. The institute has passed through remarkable achievements in the area of biomedical research. The institute has a network of national and international collaborators who are engaged in generating higher level research ideas and crafting grand project proposals, soliciting research grants, executing biomedical research and clinical trials, capacity building, long term trainings (MSc and PhD) and short term trainings (eg. Basic Research Ethics, Good Clinical Practice, Health Research Methodology, use of latest generation biomedical research facilities and analytics etc.). The dynamics of the institute has continued to shoulder more roles and responsibilities on research and development of traditional medicine, vaccine and other biological products, food and beverages, among others. AHRI would like to recruit senior scientist to mainly conduct monitoring and evaluation of a project, ethnobotanical and other biomedical studies, and establish and mange medicinal plant herbarium and botanical garden.

 Employment type and duration: The appointment shall be contractual for a period of one year, the first 45 days of which shall be on probation. There could be possible extension based on availability of funds and performance.

 Key duties and responsibilities

-          Conduct ethnobotanical and other biomedical research,

-          Establish and manage medicinal plant herbarium and botanical garden,

-          Prioritize and execute related activities on cultivation of medicinal plants,

-          Work closely with other members of the institute and other institutions who are mainly responsible for medicinal plant conservation and product development,

-          Contribute to biomedical, clinical, qualitative and quantitative research,

-          Monitor and evaluate the execution of the projects per per their timeline and deliverables,

-          Prepare plan and report as per project lead guidance,  and

-          Execute any other related tasks as may be requested by his/her close supervisor.

Job Requirements

-          PhD degree in biomedical or botanical discipline,

-          At least 10 years relevant research/work experience surrounding traditional medicine and orphan crops,

-          Have experience in plant voucher specimen collection, processing and identification,

-          Track record in curating herbarium,

-          Experience in biomedical and clinical research,

-          Having experience in monitoring and evaluation of biomedical and clinical research projects,

-          Demonstrated project management skills, and

-          Proven experience in scientific publication(s) and technical report writing.
