Job Description
Major Responsibility
Promote legal awareness and mitigation against litigations.
Proactively assess and manage legal risk and offer practical and creative solutions to the different business units of the organization.
Give business-oriented legal advice to the upcoming particular cases from different business units of the organization
Provide legal advice in relation to project contracts, financial claims, commercial contracts and employment relations of WVE
Draft (as found necessary), review commercial contracts and provide comments to Support Service Department (SSD) team and review employment contracts and provide comments to HR&O team.
Review policies, procedures, and manuals in view of the law of the land.
Ensure the organization’s compliance with regulatory requirements, and keep abreast of legislative changes
Provide subject matter expertise and training on a broad range of legal matters to the different business units of WVE
Represent the interest of World Vision Ethiopia in the courts of law
Debriefs Risk and Compliance Director and concerned departments of any emergent cases of legal nature up to consultation of the National Director and advises on alternative courses of action;
Represents the organization before the court of law on labor cases, contractual cases, extra-contractual and construction related court cases;
Facilitates Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) Forums like arbitration, mediation and negotiation for conflicts and potential conflicts that may arise in intra and inter-organizational situations;
Initiates and pursue legal proceedings as required by the organization including preparation of files, pleading cases, statements of claims, defenses, submissions and other pleadings standing for WVE;
Prepares pleadings based on the legal requirements as stipulated in the civil procedure code of Ethiopia and other relevant laws as cases may require;
Represents World Vison Ethiopia before courts of law and any judicial organ in any litigation in Ethiopia where required;
Replies, notices, and monitors legal rights and obligations
Provide legal advisory services to departments and Senior Leadership for informed decisions
Assists and/or follow-up investigation processes that may have direct or indirect legal implications
Updates the organization about newly promulgated laws and cassation court decisions of the land.
Provides awareness creation on a new legal frameworks and stipulations the appropriate Management members of the organization
Prepares and submit monthly a legal report based on the generic. Carry out and facilitate debriefing of new cases, case update meetings, regular meetings with external Legal Advisor as per agreed schedules.
Review contract and partnership documents and provide legal advice based on the law of the land before entering into agreement
Review MOUs, Contract agreements, Partnership Agreements, various legal related documents for all HUBs, APs, CPOs and HO.
Review page-by-page and make analysis of various contract documents
Accurately interpret the terms of a contract and verify the details of the agreement
Work Closely with Manager , P&C Business Partners
Other support duties
Follow up and review government regulations (existing or new) and advise the concerned departments on all legal matters pertaining to WVE relations with government ministries, departments, agencies and authorities such as ACSO, Disaster Risk Management Authority, reginal governments and others;
Keep electronic filing system and maintain documentation of court decisions, correspondence, and actions regarding legal matters.
Provide advices to government relations department on law of the land concerning work and residence permits, as well as diplomatic IDs, licenses, and driver's licenses, to qualified expat staff and their dependents.
Required Education, training, license, registration, and certification
LLB Degree in Law from a reputable University
Required Professional Experience
Five (5+) years of experience as legal officer/advisor for humanitarian organizations or related.
Excellent communication and negotiation skills.
Technical legal skills and experience in labor relations, legal compliance management, litigation & advocacy, structuring and drafting commercial contracts, employment contracts, and other legal memos, legal writing and research, legal training, client relationship management, etc.
Understanding of the country’s Legal and political environments
Knowledge on country policy priorities
Strategic thinker and detail oriented
Strong network and influencing skills.
Capacity to work under pressure and meet deadlines
Ability to identify issues, formulate opinions, make conclusions and recommendations.
Demonstrates effective computer skills, including use of Microsoft Office Suite, intranet and Internet and databases used in work efforts.
High proficiency in in written and verbal communication in English.
Ability to apply various administrative rules and regulations in work situations.
Preferred Knowledge and Qualifications
Experience in organizing events/meetings in an international setting.
Proven experience managing Legal, and Compliance issues.
Conceptual Skills (planning, organizing, strategic thinking, management process), Business skills (compliance, audit, policy, operations, finance, IT), Technical skills (risk management process, risk analysis and control, project management, vendor relations).

Travel and/or Work Environment Requirement
The position requires the ability and willingness to travel domestically and internationally.
Language Requirements
Fluent in English and Amharic. Minimum of one more additional national language is an advantage.
