Job Description

The Armauer Hansen Research Institute (AHRI) was founded in 1970 through the initiative of the Norwegian and Swedish Save the Children organizations seconded by the Ministry of Health of Ethiopia. The Institute got its name from the Norwegian physician, Gerhard Henrik Armauer Hansen, who first described the leprosy bacillus (Mycobacterium leprae). AHRI reorganized by the decree of the Council of Minister’s Regulation No. 530/2023 with the objectives of conducting biomedical, clinical trial and bioequivalence research, promoting and strengthening local production of pharmaceutical products and research capacity building under the Federal Ministry of Health. AHRI, over its 50 years in service, is well known for its hub function for skill and technology transfer and partnership embracing research agendas with direct impact in the development and transformation of population in Ethiopia and beyond.

The Malaria and Neglected Tropical Diseases (MNTD) Research Division is one of the departments in the institute and currently MNTD’s Malaria Research Unit runs different research projects on malaria in collaborations with national and international partners and funders. Therefore, the MNTD Division is looking for self-driven, motivated, innovative and energetic Junior Researchers (Bioinformaticians) to join our diverse team.

The candidates are responsible for the hands-on operation of NGS instruments and equipment in a laboratory setting. They will perform molecular laboratory activities including DNA/RNA extraction, PCR, and Illumina based Library preparation, quality control, and sequencing.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Sample preparation and DNA/RNA extraction.

  • PCR and NGS Library preparation, and quality control.

  • Operating and maintaining NGS platforms (e.g., Nextseq, miseq).

  • Data quality assessment and basic troubleshooting.

  • Adhering to laboratory protocols and safety guidelines.

  • Insilco-PCR and related activities using GUI tools

  • Assisting in bioinformatics data analysis

Job Requirements

Qualifications and Competences:

  • BSc degree in Biotechnology, Medical Laboratory Science/Technology.

  • Basic understanding in utilizing graphical user interface (GUI) bioinformatics tools

  • Experience in navigating and querying biological databases.

  • Proficient in conducting experiments within molecular laboratories

  • Basic understanding in biological data visualizations and interpretation

  • Basic computer skills (Microsoft office packages)

Duty station: Addis Ababa AHRI Head Office

Number required for each position: 1 (One)

Terms of employment: one year contract period with full time employment basis with possibility of extension based on performance and budget availability

Salary: ETB 10,386.00
