Job Description

The Armauer Hansen Research Institute (AHRI) was founded in 1970 through the initiative of the Norwegian and Swedish Save the Children organizations seconded by the Ministry of Health of Ethiopia. The Institute got its name from the Norwegian physician, Gerhard Henrik Armauer Hansen, who first described the leprosy bacillus (Mycobacterium leprae). AHRI reorganized by the decree of the Council of Minister’s Regulation No. 530/2023 with the objectives of conducting biomedical, clinical trial and bioequivalence research, promoting and strengthening local production of pharmaceutical products and research capacity building under the Federal Ministry of Health. AHRI, over its 50 years in service, is well known for its hub function for skill and technology transfer and partnership embracing research agendas with direct impact in the development and transformation of population in Ethiopia and beyond.

The Malaria and Neglected Tropical Diseases (MNTD) Research Division is one of the departments in the institute and currently MNTD’s Malaria Research Unit runs different research projects on malaria in collaborations with national and international partners and funders. Therefore, the MNTD Division is looking for self-driven, motivated, innovative and energetic Assistant Researchers (Bioinformatics Data Analysts) to join our diverse team.

The Bioinformatics Data Analysts will be responsible for analyzing biological data to identify patterns and trends. The successful candidate will design, develop and implement bioinformatics solutions to solve complex biological problems. The role requires strong technical skills in bioinformatics, programming, database management, and statistics. The Analyst will evaluate and interpret data from large-scale sequencing projects, and will generate high-quality analyses and visualizations to effectively communicate results. Additionally, they will support the research teams in developing and validating bioinformatics pipelines to analyze genomic data.

An Assistant Researcher specializing in Bioinformatics will be a vital part of our research efforts. The responsibilities of the candidate will include both laboratory work and bioinformatics analysis to bridge the gap between wet-lab experiments and computational data analysis. This role is ideal for individuals looking to gain valuable experience in both molecular biology and bioinformatics.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Conduct various molecular biology experiments, such as DNA/RNA extraction, PCR, and sequencing library preparation.

  • Assist in the development and optimization of experimental protocols.

  • Insilco-PCR and related activities using GUI tools

  • Ensure data integrity and maintain accurate records of laboratory procedures.

  • Collaborate with the bioinformatics team to process and analyze experimental data generated in the laboratory.

  • Contribute to data quality control, data preprocessing, and data analysis.

  • Assist in the development and maintenance of bioinformatics pipelines.

  • Work closely with the research team to interpret biological insights from the data.

Job Requirements

Qualifications and Competences

  • Master’s degree in Molecular Biology, Genetics, Bioinformatics and Biotechnology

  •  At least two years’ experience as a researcher

  • Strong laboratory skills, including experience with common molecular biology techniques (PCR and NGS Library preparation, and quality control).

  • Understanding of bioinformatics and the ability to work with sequencing data.

  • Experience in programming languages, such as Python or R, is a plus.

  • Excellent organizational and record-keeping skills.

  • Enthusiasm for interdisciplinary work and a strong desire to learn.
