Job Description

About GAIN

The Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN) is a Swiss-based foundation launched at the United Nations in 2002 to tackle the human suffering caused by malnutrition. Due to COVID19, conflict in Ukraine and climate change, malnutrition and hunger have worsened significantly since 2019, reversing a decade of progress. There is growing recognition that our food systems need to change if we are to reverse these trends.

GAIN’s Strategy aims to transform food systems to make healthier diets from sustainable food systems accessible to all people and especially those whose are most vulnerable to shocks. By 2027, we aim to improve the access of 1.5 billion people to nutritionally enhanced staple foods, improve the access of 25 million people to healthier diets, and support positive food system change in 10 countries. This is bold and complex, and the only way to achieve this is to work together with partners including governments, businesses, and civil society at the country and global level. These goals, and the ways of achieving them, build on our twenty-year legacy of transforming people’s lives with improved nutrition through concerted action and effective policy change.

The Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN) is seeking a Project Officer, Ethiopia Food Systems Dashboard to provide technical support on the Ethiopia Food Systems Dashboard development project. This role will be offered on a 12 months’ fixed term contract basis, subject to availability of funding. You will be based in GAIN’s Ethiopia office in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

The Ethiopia Food Systems Dashboard development project has been created and designed to collate food systems data for all regions, and additional data for the three regions, which will provide access to evidence in one place to support data-informed decision-making.

The project aims to improve awareness and a deeper understanding of key food systems issues and linkages at national and regional levels. This will then strengthen the capacity of local stakeholders and institutions to lead and manage the food systems transformation process by providing the tools, knowledge and capacity needed.

Reporting to the Project Manager, Subnational Dashboard, you will support the technical work and provide support on data generation, analysis and overall support in the Ethiopia Food Systems Dashboard development project.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Carrying out stakeholder mapping to help identify and prioritise stakeholders that we need to engage with in order contribute to the development process

  • Conducting stakeholder interviews for identifying main data sources and priority food systems indicators to include in the Ethiopian subnational dashboard and better understanding of future user’s wants and needs

  • Reviewing secondary food systems data sources available at national and regional levels and working closely with stakeholders to provide other possible relevant data sources, indicators, and identify specific access requirements

  • Completing the metadata spreadsheet and working closely with government stakeholders to complete the datasheet once the metadata is approved, including data cleaning, disaggregation and formatting of data in a way that it can be extracted and uploaded into the Food Systems Dashboard

  • Supporting the logistics and the organisation of the stakeholder advisory group convenings and country engagement workshops to train key potential users on using the Ethiopia Food Systems Dashboard

  • Attending meetings related to the Food System Dashboard, food systems report, action plan, and preparing factsheet and other materials

  • Preparing briefs, memos, high profile slide decks and engaging in other content development support

  • Compiling data, conducting data analysis and synthesizing findings for reports, briefs and for engagement with government and other stakeholders

Job Requirements

  • The ideal candidate will have proven track record in supporting food and nutrition policy dialogue and experience in government and private sector stakeholder engagement.

  • The postholder will possess strong data analysis skills and able to present complex information to non-technical audiences. You will have excellent communication skills, fluent in written and spoken English and willing to work in a multi-cultural environment. You should be highly flexible and be able to travel frequently.

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Nutrition, Public Health, International Development, Sociology, Economics, or related field. The ideal candidate will be computer literate in Microsoft Office with strong PowerPoint presentation skills. You will have strong analytical and technical skills and able to conduct desk research, literature reviews, and other research analysis and synthesize findings.
