BACKGROUND:

The International Rescue Committee, one of the world’s largest humanitarian international NGOs, provides relief, rehabilitation, and development support to vulnerable people and communities over 30 countries. We began work in Ethiopia in 2000 in response to severe drought in Ethiopia’s Somali region and are currently providing assistance to Ethiopians and refugees in six regions in Ethiopia, implementing emergency and development programs in health, water and sanitation, economic recovery and development (ERD), women’s protection and empowerment, education, child protection, and multi-sectoral emergency response.

 Job Overview:  

 The position holder is responsible for implementing a community-based child protection program in Bambasi IDP site. The position holder will support all aspects of the prevention and response activities of the program that include working with the community, psychosocial support activities and Minely lead the case management service in collaboration with the woreda bureau of women and children affair (BOWCA).

 Major Responsibilities:

 Case management

  • Provide coaching, mentoring and technical support to the woreda BOWCA on child protection case management throughout the case management steps.

  • Assist the BOWCA team in the assessment of the living conditions of children in the IDP site and participate in the development of an appropriate strategy in addressing their needs.

  • Support team leaders and social workers of BOWCA in the monitoring, verification, and documentation of cases of children.

  •  Follow-up the preparation and implementation of case action plan and home visit conducted by the social workers.

  • Carry out data Entry into the Child Protection Information System (CPIMS) database and share compiled reports on biweekly basis.

  • Support the BOWCA child protection officer in facilitating and organizing appropriate care arrangement, and suitable alternative care system with close supervision and attention to the individual concerns of children.

  • Through working with CP committees identify potential foster families for unaccompanied and separated children in collaboration with social workers and community leaders.

  • Participate in BID Pannels with other partners, in conducting the Best Interest Assessment to ensure the needs of children are addressed.

  • Assist the BOWCA office child protection team as needed.

Other additional responsibilities

  • Organize and facilitate positive parenting weekly sessions.(Family Makes the Difference!)

  • Assist the child rights clubs to demonstrate to the community and the concerning bodies about protection concerns that children are facing and promote the participation of children in all matters affecting their lives.

  • Organize and assist psychosocial support activities at (the Safe Healing and Learning Space (SHLS).

  • Work closely with the CP Officer in the celebration of international events days and other awareness-raising sessions.

  • Facilitate the involvement of children and the community (leaders and parents) in the child-friendly space and document the progress made.

  • Support the preparation of budget, work, and spending plans, and PR tracking to supervise the accurate utilization of the budget and timely implementation of activities.

  • Adhere and fully abide by the child protection code of conduct.

  • Shall take any additional responsibilities as requested by supervisors.

Key Working Relationships:

The position holder will directly report to the Child Protection Officer with additional oversight from the Asossa field coordinator and technical support from CP managers based in Addis Ababa.

Job Requirements

  • Apply basic to intermediate level knowledge of procedural and systems to perform the requirement of the job skills and knowledge typically acquired through a combination of job-related training, some on-job experience and some formal education.

  • University Degree in Social Science, Social Work, psychology/Sociology with 2 years of relevant work experience for diploma holders or 0- year relevant work experience for first degree

  • NGO experience is a plus.

  • Fluent spoken and written English, and Amharic languages

  • Experience in capacity building and mentoring.

  • Good digital literacy: MS Word and Excel.

  • Good interpersonal and problem-solving skills and flexibility.

  • Good understanding of CP program approaches and practice.

  • Confirmed experience in developing competency-based training modules!

  • Fluent spoken and written of local language is a plus
