Employee Contract Type: Intern

The AU Advocacy and External Engagement Graduate Intern will provide administrative, research, planning, note-taking, and policy analysis support.

The role is aligned with the African Union Liaison Office Partnership Strategy and aligned with the objectives of the MoU signed between the AU.

The role will support the achievement of the four Advocacy and External Engagement Outcomes namely:

  • No child is left behind through the 2030 Agenda and the SDGs framework,

  • The Enough campaign to end child hunger and malnutrition and end violence

  • against children (EVAC)

  • The rights of children are prioritized in response to a humanitarian crisis and

  • Relevant AU frameworks and protocols that align with the Mission of WV

Major Responsibilities

20% Monitor and Report on various AU engagements and events that relate to the work of the AULO.

  • Schedule, send the agenda, and take meeting notes during meetings organized by the office or in meetings where the AULO participates in

  • Update the event tracker and partners' contact list

  • File and organize all AULO Advocacy documents in Box

  • Draft the quarterly engagement report including people reached, children reached, and policy changes

  • Update the key events AU events and moments in line with the AU calendar

20% Research and Analysis

  • Draft 4 policy briefs or other papers or articles (one per quarter)

  • Update the AULO statistics table quarterly

20% Networking and External Engagement

  • Participate and learn from the monthly Working Groups e.g. Regional Protection WG, Regional GBV WG, Inter-Agency (IAWG) Working Group – Advocacy and Communications

20% Administrative Support, Planning and Reporting

  • Support the drafting and monitoring of budget, agenda, and logistics *where necessary)

  • Provide support for external meetings, workshops, launches, conferences, or forums

  • Document relevant documents on a shared drive

  • Ensure the office is clean at all times (supervise the work of office cleaners)

  • Ensure visitors are well received and all follow-ups documented

20% Communication

  • Support Regions and Countries to identify opportunities for child and youth engagement

  • Update and manage the AULO social media platforms by posting relevant events. Track WV mentions especially on Twitter

  • Support children’s participation in AULO Advocacy events in line with child safeguarding principlesULO statistics table quarterly

Job Requirements

KNOWLEDGE/QUALIFICATIONS FOR THE ROLE

Required Professional Experience

  • 1 to 2 years of experience in advocacy, external engagement, campaigns or policy analysis work in developing countries.

  • Knowledge on Child Rights including the African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child or the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.

  • Experience planning and organizing workshops or forums for participants in multiple countries.

  • Excellent communication (written and oral) and interpersonal skills, particularly in a cross-cultural environment

  • Planning and organizational skills and ability to prioritize multiple activities Research experience especially in policy and advocacy

  • Understanding of humanitarian and fragile contexts

  • Good understanding of the AU will be an added value

Required Education, training, license, registration, and certification

  • Bachelor's degree in social sciences, communication, public policy, management or law

  • Training certificate on advocacy, child rights and policy influence, an added advantage

Preferred Knowledge and Qualifications

  • Capabilities – achieving, thinking, self-managing, relational, networking and collaboration and humanitarian diplomacy.

Travel and/or Work Environment Requirement

  • Very minimal travel Physical Requirements

Language :

  • Excellent written and communications skills in English.

  • Any AU official language will be an added advantage
