Program Summary

Mercy Corps Ethiopia currently secured USAID/BHA funded multisectoral response program entitled ‘Humanitarian Assistance for Conflict-Affected Populations (HACAP)” in Oromia and Afar regions. The goal of the proposed program is to increase access to Life-saving Services for Conflict-affected IDPs, Returnees, and Vulnerable Populations through provision of integrated Multi-Sectoral Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene Promotion (WASH), Nutrition and Protection support and, Multipurpose Cash Assistance (MPCA) in five Woredas of Oromia and Afar regions.

General Position Summary

The Clinical Nurse will ensure the technical quality and delivery of mobile health and nutrition services in the assigned woreda. Responsibilities include daily implementation of consultation, outreach EPI, health education, sanitation, safe motherhood, and child health services according to the pastoralist area guidelines. The position also involves providing supervision, technical assistance, and capacity building to health extension workers and health facility staff. The Clinical Nurse will document service delivery and compile weekly and monthly reports for project officers and woreda health offices.

Essential Job Responsibilities

Strategy & Vision

  • Collaborate with team members to integrate nutrition and health services effectively.

  • Work with local authorities and partners to harmonize efforts for better impact and sustainability.

  • Stay informed and adapt to changing situations and contexts.

Program Management

  • Coordinate and facilitate the implementation of integrated mobile health and nutrition activities, including site selection and weekly movement planning.

  • Provide basic health services, including community IMNCI/ICCM, safe motherhood, emergency services, referral, health education, and EPI, as per Afar RHB Mobile Health and Nutrition guidelines.

  • Facilitate training and work closely with MOH staff at health posts, centers, hospitals, and district levels.

  • Organize and report on EPI, health education, and consultations daily, weekly, and monthly.

  • Ensure referral systems and linkages between services and health facilities.

  • Adhere to medical and nutritional treatment protocols for children and infants.

  • Receive and verify weekly reports from HEWs and submit to Woreda Project Officers.

  • Participate in capacity-building training, health education sessions, and IEC/BCC applications.

  • Follow up on absentees/defaulters and maintain current records of beneficiaries and staff.

Team Management

  • Support and liaise with health center staff, providing on-the-job training and capacity building.

  • Ensure health professionals participate in daily routine work for sustainability and smooth phase-out strategy.

  • Mentor and assist HEWs in patient care decisions, especially for those needing hospital transfer.

  • Support program integration with DPPO and MoH through training and supervision.

  • Train and support community volunteers to convey health messages clearly.

  • Maintain relationships with local health authorities for seamless service integration.

Job Requirement

Knowledge and Experience

  • BSc Degree in Clinical Nursing or Public Health with a minimum of four years of experience in an NGO environment, including two years in clinical settings.

  • Training and experience in safe motherhood practices, family planning, IMNCI/ICCM.

  • Skills in program planning, implementation, and monitoring.

  • Experience in peer group training and counseling.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and strong interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment.

  • Proficiency in written and spoken English and the local language.

  • Strong human relations skills.

  • Willingness to work under pressure and extend working hours.
