Job Description

A school counselor and SEL Coordinator  is a professional who provides support and guidance to students in their academic, social, and
personal development combine with SEL (social emotional learning). A school counselor approach that focuses on
developing student's  social and emotional skills, such as self-awareness, self-management, social awareness,
relationship skills, and responsible decision-making.
Counseling: Conduct individual and group counseling sessions with students to address their emotional,
behavioral, and academic concerns. Help students develop problem-solving and decision-making skills.
Academic Support: Assist students in setting academic goals, developing study skills, and creating
academic plans. Provide guidance on course selection, graduation requirements, and college or career
planning.
Personal Development: Promote personal growth and self-awareness among students. Address issues
such as self-esteem, stress management, conflict resolution, and coping skills.
Crisis Intervention: Provide immediate support and counseling to students during emergencies, traumatic
events, or critical incidents. Collaborate with other professionals to ensure student's; safety and well-
being.
Collaboration: Work closely with teachers, administrators, and parents to identify and address student
needs. Participate in meetings, conferences, and committees to develop and implement strategies for
student success.
 Advocacy: Advocate for student's; rights and well-being. Assist in resolving conflicts between students,
teachers, and parents. Ensure that students have access to necessary resources and support services.
 Referrals: Make appropriate referrals to external resources, such as mental health professionals, social
services, or community organizations, when additional support is needed beyond the scope of the school
counselors role.
 Record-Keeping: Maintain accurate and confidential records of counseling sessions, assessments, and
interventions. Ensure compliance with legal and ethical guidelines for student confidentiality.
 Professional Development: Engage in ongoing professional development activities to stay updated on
counseling techniques, educational trends, and relevant research. Attend workshops, conferences, and
training sessions to enhance counseling skills.
 School-wide Initiatives: Collaborate with other school staff to implement and evaluate school-wide
programs and initiatives aimed at improving student well-being, such as anti-bullying campaigns,
character education, or mental health awareness programs.
-Develop age-appropriate social-emotional learning curricula or programs that align with the needs of
students and the goals of the school or district. Incorporate evidence-based practices and research into
curriculum design.
-Deliver engaging and interactive lessons or workshops to students, teachers, and parents on various
social-emotional skills and competencies. Utilize effective teaching strategies and techniques to promote
active learning and skill development.
-Develop and implement assessment tools and strategies to measure students' social-emotional
competencies and track their progress over time. Analyze data to identify areas for improvement and
inform instructional decisions.
-Provide training and professional development opportunities for teachers and staff on incorporating
social-emotional learning into their instructional practices. Support educators in understanding and
implementing SEL strategies in the classroom.
-Research and gather resources, materials, and tools to support social-emotional learning initiatives. Stay
informed about current research and best practices in the field of SEL and share relevant resources with
educators and staff.

Overall, a school counselor plays a crucial role in supporting student's; academic success, personal growth, and
emotional well-being. They work as part of a multidisciplinary team to create a positive and inclusive school
environment.

Job Requirement

  • BA Degree in Psychology or related field

  • Proven experience counseling, advising, and supporting students

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills

  • Ability to work effectively with students, coworkers, and parents

  • Strong knowledge of schools policies and procedures

  • Experience in coaching and mentoring

  • Strong organizational skills

  • Ability to perform administrative tasks
