ISS Addis Ababa: Research Intern, Training for Peace (TfP) program

The ISS is seeking an intern based in Addis Ababa to support the implementation of the various activities of the Training for Peace project. This internship particularly provides a unique opportunity to contribute to research and analysis on key dynamics around peace operations in Africa and gain an in-depth understanding of African peace and security dynamics and the United Nations (UN) and African Union (AU) peace and security frameworks. 

Background: 

Training for Peace (TfP) is a capacity support programme to the African Union Commission (AUC) funded by the Government of Norway. The primary objective of the TfP is to contribute to strengthening the capacity of the AUC to prevent, manage and resolve conflicts and insecurity on the continent through the deployment of effective full-spectrum peace operations. Overview of duties 

  • Assist in conducting research on topics related to African peace and security dynamics, the different pillars of the African Peace and Security Architecture as well as other strategic peace and security issues relevant to the work of the TfP. 

  • Assist in conducting research and analysis on the UN and AU peace operations, 

  • Assist in organising and coordinating events 

  • Assist with planning communication and coordination

  • Assist with administration and logistics

  • undertake other activities assigned by the TfP Project Manager 

The contract will be for 6 months and a monthly stipend will be offered.

Qualifications:

  • A post-graduate degree in peace and security studies, international relations, political science, African studies, or a related field 

  • Good research and analytical skills, with an interest in Africa’s peace and conflict dynamics, peace operations/missions, and the UN’s and AU’s Peace and security frameworks. Individuals with prior work or research experience in African peace and security frameworks and UN and AU peace operations are strongly encouraged to apply. 

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English. Proficiency in French is an advantage

  • Computer literate, working knowledge of the Microsoft Office suite and data analysis software (e.g. Excel, SPSS or R) is advantageous

  • Organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work on multiple tasks simultaneously

  • Enthusiasm for teamwork and collaboration in a dynamic, multicultural environment
