Job Description

The Population Council Ethiopia office is looking for a Researcher to support research activities in diverse areas, including sexual and reproductive health, adolescents and young people, migration and trafficking, gender equality and equity, and climate and environmental change. The Council has been working in Ethiopia since 1993 in partnership with the Government, Ministries, NGOs, universities, and community-based organizations to improve the lives of the most marginalized adolescent girls and young women and the men and boys in their lives. The Council conducts population-based surveys and qualitative studies to generate robust data about the lives of people in Ethiopia in diverse settings and circumstances, and tests tailored programmatic innovations through rigorous evaluations. These data have been instrumental in shaping national and international policies and programs for people in Ethiopia and globally.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • The Researcher will support the Council’s Ethiopia office by coordinating and contributing to research activities under the supervision of the Country Director. 

  • Strengthen the quality of quantitative and qualitative data, undertake data cleaning and analysis, and support the interpretation of research findings to inform policy and programming on the Council’s four priority areas: sexual and reproductive health and rights and choices, adolescents and young people, gender equality and equity, and climate and environmental changes. 

  • Develop data entry screens and supervise data entry for quantitative studies and data bases, ensuring the quality and accuracy of data entry and undertaking data cleaning, spot checks and internal consistency checks to ensure accurate and clean data.

  • Develop procedures for transcription of qualitative interviews and supervise transcribers. Undertake post-coding of qualitative data in packages such as NVIVO or Atlas and/or train and supervise junior researchers to do so.

  • Manage all Council databases ensuring strict adherence to ethical protocols and Council data policies including the security, confidentiality, and anonymity of all data, both qualitative and quantitative.

  • Collaborate with other Council researchers in developing and pretesting research instruments, translating and back-translating instruments as well as training data collectors.

  • Collaborate in analysis and writing of reports and manuscripts for publication in international peer-reviewed journals, grey literature reports and briefs, blogs, and local outlets.

  • Lead or support dissemination activities including high visibility workshops, press releases and email/website dissemination/postings. Make presentations of Council research in Council workshops and other research forums.

  • Strengthen project implementation capacity through tailoring, development, and capacity building on management information systems (MIS) to be used by project partners and affiliates. Ensure strong utilization of data in making informed program modifications and/or mid-course corrections.

  • In collaboration with other Council staff, represent Council research and activities in meetings with donors, partners and research working groups.

  • Participate in and contribute to research forums such as conferences, workshops and meetings that provide opportunities to promote the Council’s work, increase visibility, network, and establish collaborations.

  • Lead or contribute to donor reporting, including preparation of routine donor reports, and submissions for Council projects, as required.

Job Requirement

  • Master’s in social science, international development, public health, public policy or a related field.

  • Knowledge experience in all or at least one of the Council’s four priority areas: sexual and reproductive health and rights and choices, adolescents and young people, gender equality and equity, and climate and environmental changes, preferably at the intersection of two or more areas 

  • Very strong facility with database management and qualitative and quantitative research packages.

  • Proficient in English, with strong oral and written communication skills, a proven ability to analyze and interpret research findings, and a keen attention to grammatical detail and presentation. 

  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills and ability to engage with various colleagues and partners at multiple levels effectively. Proven ability to work well across multiple stakeholders. 

  • Proven track record of responsiveness, flexibility, and ability to manage multiple concurrent activities/tasks and consistently take responsibility for high-quality deliverables. 

  • Demonstrated skills in data analysis software for quantitative and/or qualitative data analysis (e.g., Stata, SPSS, R, Nvivo, ATLAS.ti).

  • International experience and demonstrated publication history is considered a plus.
