The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) Delegation in Ethiopia is looking to hire an experienced, highly motivated and qualified person for the position of Protection Field Officer 1 based in Gondar (with possibility of change of base station from Gondar to Bahir Dar) with frequent field visits to Benishangul Gumuz.
Terms of Employment: Fixed term contract until December 2025 with possibility of extension based on budget availability.

ACCOUNTABILITIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The Protection Field Officer contributes to the implementation and monitoring of the ICRC protection activities in Amhara and Benshangul Gumuz.
Standard function description:
Contribute to the implementation and follow-up of various field activities, mostly the Protection of Family Links and the Protection of Civilian Population, but also Networking with local stakeholders and authorities, and Communication.
Monitor the humanitarian environment and needs in the areas of responsibility; assess the security, cultural and political environment relevant to the ICRC through consultation of media, reports, publications, networking; share relevant information with colleagues and report any change of the situation as per the structure's communication flow.
Collect, compile and translate information relevant to the projects. Following each field trip, contributes to written reporting.
Provide interpretation services (Amhara-English, English- Amhara) with different interlocutors and beneficiaries, based on the needs.
Facilitate and contribute to the work of the delegates or other specialists, either internally or externally (internal or external meetings with authorities at local level, briefings on ICRC field activities, etc.).
Contributes to maintain, develop and map contacts with relevant protection interlocutors at regional and local levels.
Participate to field missions, which can at times be carried out independently (50%field).
Ensure administrative and financial follow up after field missions.
Perform other tasks for other departments when required.
Protection
Implements protection activities under the supervision of the Protection Team Leader.
Contributes to analyses of the security, socioeconomic, cultural and political environment relevant to the ICRC, shares relevant information with team members, and reports any change in the situation.
Collects, compiles and interprets protection information in the zones of responsibility from direct and indirect sources and shares it with field delegates/PTL/HoSD.
Contribute to the analysis of the protection environment in areas of operation based on participation in field activities, network of interlocutors, and review of public sources (e.g. social media)
Analyses and contributes to written internal reporting and activity programming.
Helps to make internal and external meeting meaningful (through preparation, participation, reporting and follow-up).
Documents protection of the civilian population events in relation to conflict and according to delegation’s priorities, and ensures follow-up.
Builds and strengthens engagement with communities through conducting and supporting individual/group interviews with community members; and ensures proper reporting, filing processing and follow-up on identified protection concerns.
In close coordination with RFL team in Gondar, Addis and ERCS, ensure the proper implementation of the RFL procedures and conduct follow up on RFL files in areas of operations.
Build and maintain contacts with local officials, community leaders, community members and relevant stakeholders who can assist in the protection activities.
Guarantee a thorough follow up of the most vulnerable cases identified and supported by the ICRC through cash assistance, referral to health centers or relevant stakeholders, donation of dignity kits or another follow-up.
Timely preparation and submission of administrative documents (Field Trip Requests, Travel request, booking of hotel, working advance, etc.) prior each Field Trip. Ensure administrative and financial follow-up after field missions.
Ensures proper reporting and treatment of data according to established workflows and protection data procedures.
Fosters a conducive environment (multidisciplinary approach, good team dynamic) among team members.
May be asked to support when needed other protection related activities or activities in favour of the ICRC in Amhara.
Networking and Security
Support the Sub-Delegation in maintaining and developing of a network of key interlocutors (civil authorities, police, civil society, NGOs, UN, etc) relevant to questions of security in areas of operations.
Contributes to ensuring that the list of key interlocutors is kept up-to-date.
Represent and promote the ICRC with regard to its activities with all relevant interlocutors, including through operational dissemination sessions when appropriate.
Inform and advise the Protection Team Leader and management on the security situation, and whenever required assist in obtaining security guarantees for the deployment of ICRC teams in the zones of responsibility.
Cooperation
Contributes good working relations with the ERCS in zones of responsibilities through regular visits, in close collaboration with the Protection of Family Link delegate and Protection Team Leader, Cooperation department and field team.
Analysis and synthesis
Contribute to the analysis of the humanitarian situation and security environment in areas of responsibility
Contribute to the preparation of institutional reports, minutes of meetings, key points, and other ad hoc written reporting.
ADDITIONAL DUTIES
Contribute to the planning of field trips and assist in the administrative preparation of field trips, respecting the given deadlines.
In collaboration with the support departments, organize and follow up on the logistics necessary to each field trip (materials, vehicles, IT, hotels etc).
Understand the main components of the Red Cross/Red Crescent Movement and the ICRC’s objectives and activities in Ethiopia.
Apply the security rules at all times.
Respect the humanitarian nature of work within the ICRC.
Respect and observe staff regulations of the ICRC in Ethiopia.
Understand the concept of confidentiality and treat information (general and specific) accordingly and with accuracy.
University degree in the field Social Science, Social work, Law or related fields
2-5 years’ previous professional experiences, for instance in the field of social/political/economic science or similar.
Excellent command of English and Amharic.
Good writing and reporting skills
Computer literacy.
