The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) Delegation in Ethiopia is looking to hire an experienced, highly motivated and qualified person to fill the position of Truck Driver based in Addis Ababa.

Terms of Employment: 12 months fixed term contract with possibility of extension based on budget availability. 

PURPOSE

·       The Truck Driver Driver transports goods and people in a safe and timely manner, in accordance with ICRC rules and regulations and national traffic laws.

RELATIONSHIPS

• Internally, interacts mainly with logistics staff and other ICRC employees.
• Externally, interacts with people related to their work, e.g. traffic police, weapon bearers at checkpoints, fuel-station personnel, etc. May interact with beneficiaries on rare occasions.

GENERAL DUTIES

·       Understands and adheres to the seven Fundamental Principles of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement

·       Understands and adheres to the ICRC Code of Conduct

·       Understands the roles of the components of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement

·       Respects and observes staff regulations and security rules at all times

·       Represents the ICRC in a professional manner at all times

·       Develops and maintains a pleasant and conducive working environment with colleagues and line managers

·       Performs all duties with the highest level of confidentiality in the interest of the employees and the ICRC

·       May be asked to perform tasks not covered in this job description and to provide support to other departments when necessary

ACCOUNTABILITIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Functional Responsibilities:

• Drives trucks and other vehicles in strict adherence to internal security rules and national traffic laws; drives efficiently to minimize fuel consumption and use of material.
• Constantly monitors security conditions on the road.
• Is accountable for the cargo under their supervision, from signing of the waybill to delivery.
• Loads and unloads the truck or supervises loading and unloading.
• Ensures that goods are stored inside the vehicle according to local, international and ICRC safety standards (attachment and distribution of goods, use of pallets, etc.).
• Checks their assigned vehicle(s)' equipment, general functioning and body condition and ensures that it is kept fuelled and clean inside and out.
• Checks that trips have been authorized where necessary.
• Immediately reports accidents, defects and/or missing equipment to management.
• Can act as head of convoy as needed (in charge of the driver(s), application of security rules and time-frame for the convoy).

ADDITIONAL DUTIES

Security

  1. Informs Car Dispatcher about time of departure and return to the base

  2. Makes sure that truck is parked in safe area all the time

  3. Is aware of, and reacts to the current security situation

  4. Respects ICRC internal security rules all times

  5. Respects the laws in general and traffic regulations in particular

  6. Use the security belt and oblige passenger to use it

  7. Drives only ICRC goods and personnel in ICRC Trucks unless instructed differently by superior

  8. Fills Waiver of responsibility when transporting non ICRC passenger

  9. Fills in relevant field trip and other form

  10. Avoids using mobile phones while driving and respects radio communication procedures

  11. Acts as convoy leader when required

Fuel

  1. Ensures that the truck is always refuelled on time

  2. Drives in manner that minimizes fuel consumption and maintains vehicle in good condition

  3. Fills in refuelling data in logbook and fuel control sheets

  4. Hands over any fuel bills to dispatcher at the end of the trip

Load responsibility

  1. When applicable, is present at the loading and unloading of goods and confirms that the quantity corresponds with relevant documentation

  2. Is responsible for goods documentation

  3. At unloading presents documentation to the receiver of the goods to be signed and returns it to dispatcher/log

  4. Participate to the loading and unloading of his Truck if needed or requested.

General 

  1. Drives in safe, responsible and accident free manner

  2. Adapts the way of driving to the weather and road conditions

  3. Reports to dispatcher about road conditions, eventual problems etc.

  4. Reports vehicle accidents immediately using appropriate forms (including minor scratches)

Truck checking & maintenance 

  1. On each handover and once a week checks vehicle equipment and body condition assigned for checking through checking lists

  2. Is able to change tyre or bulb on the road

  3. Is responsible for equipment, tools, chains, spare tyres placed in the vehicles and reports any changes to Car Dispatcher

  4. Informs Car Dispatcher/convoyes/workshop manager about service, maintenance and other possible repairs needed in advance and fills in technical report

  5. During the trips monitors all cabin instruments to be able to promptly react if needed

Others 

  1. Replaces other driver during their absence

  2. Performs any other activities upon request of immediate supervisor

  3. When required, acts as translator/FO for the delegate

  4. Flexibility and Willingness to work irregular schedules

  5. Helpful attitude

Job Requirements

Minimum Certification / Education Required

  • High school graduate

  • Driving license 5th grade

  •  Very good command of spoken & written English and Amharic

 Professional Experience required

  • Good knowledge of the security situation and terrain in the area of assignment.

  • Minimum 5 years' experience as a truck and trailer driver.

  • Ability to change a tyre and carry out other minor repairs (e.g. change light bulbs) on the road.
