Job Description
The position is to be filled as soon as possible, with an initial contract duration of two years. There are very good prospects for an extension. Employment location will be Addis Abeba, Ethiopia.
The Advocacy Advisor will be responsible for developing and implementing advocacy strategies to advance the mission and goals of the organization. The role involves influencing policy, building relationships with key stakeholders, managing advocacy-related projects, and raising awareness of the organization’s work in areas of food and nutrition security.
Advocacy Strategy Development:
Develop and implement a comprehensive advocacy strategy aligned with the organization’s mission and goals.
Identify key advocacy opportunities and develop action plans to influence policy changes.
Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of advocacy strategies and activities.
Ensure that all advocacy messages, documents and strategies are evidence-based, drawn from field experience and assessments, and of high quality and effectiveness.
Stakeholder Engagement:
Build and maintain relationships with key stakeholders, including government officials, NGOs, community leaders, and other relevant organizations.
Represent the organization in meetings, conferences, and other events to promote its advocacy agenda.
Coordinate and lead advocacy coalitions and networks.
Policy Analysis and Research:
Conduct research and analysis on relevant policies, legislation, and issues impacting the organization’s work.
Prepare policy briefs, position papers, and other advocacy materials to support the organization’s advocacy efforts.
Stay informed about national and international policy developments related to the organization’s focus areas.
Communication and Outreach:
Develop and implement communication strategies to raise awareness of the organization’s advocacy work.
Work with the communications team to produce advocacy-related content, including reports, articles, social media posts, and press releases.
Organize events, workshops, and campaigns to engage and mobilize stakeholders.
Project Management:
Plan, implement, and manage advocacy-related projects, ensuring they are completed on time, within scope, and within budget.
Develop project plans, set objectives, and coordinate activities with team members and partners.
Monitor and report on project progress, identifying and addressing any issues or risks.
Support the implementation of WHH's advocacy initiatives such as Right to Food (RtF) project on by building and strengthening coalitions at the sub-national and national levels.
Under the advocacy initiatives liaise with project coordinators, WHH leadership, partners, and International Coordination Team (ICT) to conceptualize/design the advocacy and Social Accountability (SA) work at Macro-Meso-Micro levels.
Facilitate iteration of the RtF Project Context Analysis along with the feasibility study by partners and coalition members leading to articulation of advocacy strategies and action plans for SA piloting and scaling.
Partnership Management:
Develop and manage partnerships with other organizations to advance shared advocacy goals.
Negotiate and manage agreements and collaborations with partners.
Facilitate regular communication and coordination with partners to ensure alignment and effective collaboration.
Capacity Building:
Provide training and support to staff and partners on advocacy-related topics.
Develop and disseminate advocacy tools and resources.
Foster a culture of advocacy within the organization.
Representation
Represent Welthungerhilfe in local and national foras, engaging with government authorities, UN organizations, NGOs in consultation with line manager and Regional Representative.
Support Welthungerhilfe and partner presence in important national, regional and international advocacy efforts.
Bachelor’s degree Social Sciences, Public Policy, Project Management, or related field. Master’s degree will be preferred.
Four years’ experience in a relevant position, preferably with an international NGO.
Working with major international donors, knowledge of grants compliance requirements and securing external donor funding.
Demonstrated experience using innovative communication tools and technologies to engage and influence stakeholders and increasing visibility and recognition of the organization.
Knowledge and experience of incorporating key approaches across programs i.e. agriculture, nutrition, civil society strengthening.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with an ability to engage with diverse audiences.
Strong writing and editing skills (English) and the ability to summarize and repackage technical information in clear, compelling language.
Ability to organize, plan effectively, and to work under pressure often to strict deadlines.
Good networking skills.
