Job Description

VIS Ethiopia is seeking a candidate for the post of MHPSS Expert (mental health and psychosocial support). The MHPSS Expert (mental health and psychosocial support) will be working in the project RESTORE ESSENTIAL HEALTH, NUTRITION AND FOOD SECURITY SERVICES IN SHIRE, TIGRAY, which is Funded by the Italian Development Cooperation Agency (AICS), and it is going to be implemented in Shire town and the peripheral rural woredas, in South West Zone of the Tigray Region in Ethiopia.         

Overall objective: 

The general objective is to contribute to a rapid and effective humanitarian response in Ethiopia, for reduced mortality and vulnerability of populations affected by the conflict in the north of the country, the Tigray Region. 

Specific objectives:

The specific objective is to restore and ensure life-saving, inclusive and gender-responsive health and nutrition services for both the displaced people and the host communities, in conflict-affected area of Shire Endasilasse, Tigray Region of Ethiopia. 

JOB SUMMARY 

Under the overall guidance and supervision of the MHPSS Coordinator and VIS- Project Coordinator Tigray, the MHPSS Expert (mental health and psychosocial support) is responsible for the proper implementation of the project activities aimed at improving the food security of internally displaced people and the most vulnerable populations of the host communities in the project areas. He/she will ensure smooth operations of the project and consistency of project implementation with VIS rules and regulations. 

 RESPONSIBILITIES AND TASKS 

  • Assist the MHPSS Coordinator in coordinating and implementing all VIS and SDB MHPSS activities, verifying their proper implementation in accordance with the project chronogram and internationally and nationally recognized quality standards; 

  •  Facilitate contacts with operational and institutional stakeholders involved in project implementation, with particular reference to those relevant to MHPSS activities; 

  • To cooperate in the production of documents related to the implementation of the project: periodic implementation plans, individual cards and patient register for MHPSS activities, psychosocial triage manual and management of listening units, dissemination materials, formulation of reports and briefing notes on the activities carried out; 

  • Coordinate and supervise the work of SDB PSS Counselors and SDB Social Worker in Shire in the listening units and Child Friendly Space; 

  • Ensure the management of the listening units and Child-Friendly Space according to the highest quality standards and with respect for the fundamental rights of all participants; 

  • Ensure the necessary coordination with institutional stakeholders and other NGOs operating in the focus area for strengthening the referral of cases requiring specialized medical support in the mental health sector.

Duration: 12 months period

Salary Range: In birr 45,000.00-51,000.00 basic salary based on experience and qualification

Start Date: As soon as possible

Job Requirements

  • Required qualification and years since its issuance: Bachelor's or Master's degree in Psychology and/or Medicine, with specialization in mental health and psychiatric care and/or psycho-social support, completed at least three years, or a related field;  

  • Any other specialized qualifications: Possession of certificates attesting to participation in courses related to international cooperation (particularly Project Cycle Management) will be considered a preferential requirement;

  • Degree of work experience in the area of professional expertise: At least 3 years of field experience in a similar position employed by NGO; 

  • Prior experience working in the Tigray Region, specifically in shire areas, will be considered an added value;

  • Fluency in Amharic and Tigrigna languages, excellent knowledge of written and spoken English; 

  • INGO experience is an asset
