The Transport Operations Officer at East Africa National Distribution SC. is responsible for overseeing the daily transportation operations to ensure efficient, timely, and cost-effective delivery of cement, construction materials, and related products. This role involves managing transportation logistics, optimizing routes, ensuring compliance with safety standards, and maintaining relationships with transport providers. The Transport Operations Officer works closely with the Logistics Manager to support strategic objectives and operational efficiency.

Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Transportation Operations Management:

   • Oversee daily transportation operations to ensure the timely and cost-effective movement of goods.

   • Coordinate with transport coordinators to manage schedules, routes, and vehicle assignments.

   • Implement and monitor transportation strategies to optimize efficiency and reduce costs.

2. Route and Fleet Optimization:

   • Analyze and optimize transportation routes to enhance delivery efficiency and minimize operational costs.

   • Monitor vehicle performance and implement strategies for fleet optimization.

   • Ensure effective utilization of the fleet by managing load planning and route scheduling.

3. Supplier and Vendor Management:

   • Manage relationships with third-party transport providers to ensure service quality and cost-effectiveness.

   • Evaluate and select transportation vendors based on performance, cost, and service levels.

   • Negotiate contracts and service level agreements with transport providers.

4. Compliance and Safety:

   • Ensure all transportation activities comply with safety regulations, environmental standards, and company policies.

   • Conduct regular safety inspections and audits of vehicles and transportation processes.

   • Address and resolve any compliance issues or safety incidents promptly.

5. Budget and Cost Control:

   • Assist in the development and management of the transportation budget, monitoring expenses to ensure alignment with financial objectives.

   • Identify opportunities for cost reduction and process improvements in transportation operations.

   • Provide regular reports to the Logistics Manager on transportation performance and financial metrics.

6. Technology and Process Improvement:

   • Utilize transportation management systems (TMS) and other technologies to enhance operational efficiency and visibility.

   • Identify and implement process improvements to streamline transportation operations and reduce lead times.

   • Stay informed about industry trends and technological advancements to apply relevant innovations.

7. Team Leadership and Development:

   • Lead, mentor, and develop the transport team, fostering a culture of excellence and accountability.

   • Implement training programs to enhance the skills and performance of the transportation staff.

Job Requirements

Education:

• Bachelor’s degree in Logistics, Supply Chain Management, Business Administration, or a related field.

• Professional certification in transportation or logistics is an advantage.

Experience:

• A minimum of 5 years of experience in transportation management or logistics operations.

• Proven experience in managing transportation fleets and optimizing routes.

• Experience in working with third-party logistics providers and transport vendors.
