Qualitative data collectors to support the research operation for different programs under the supervision of the Researcher who will be primarily responsible, for the overall research activities of PSI Ethiopia. PSI Ethiopia engages in data and evidence generation in different health areas and programs throughout the country. These insights that we generate are based on surveys and qualitative research that are conducted based on requirements and solicitations to inform programs or as part of impacting policy on the health areas.
Qualitative Data Collectors will conduct semi-structured (Unstructured) key informant interviews (KIIs) with stakeholders, communities, and service providers. They will work with minimal supervision, utilizing their excellent interpersonal communication skills to put interviewees at ease, upload their data daily, maintain regular communication with team members via email, chat, phone, or other electronic methods, and participate in training and team meetings. Data Collectors are expected to be fluent in local languages, with functional English fluency.
Data Collectors must attend scheduled training courses, be available for team meetings during regular business hours, be responsive to inquiries from team leaders, provide accurate reporting, and act ethically. A Non-Disclosure Agreement is required, and PSI reserves the right to conduct a background check on candidates.
The main role of Qualitative Data Collector is to conduct qualitative data collection and engagement in the following
Participate in data collection training, including pilot testing and tailoring data collection tools.
Conduct quality KIIs, in-depth interviews, document reviews, and focus group discussions (FGDs) with identified study participants.
Properly audio record the interviews and take field notes.
Upload the audio recordings to a specified drive daily.
Regularly communicate and coordinate with the research team and survey team to ensure smooth data collection.
Participate in team meetings and briefings as needed.
Comply with the ethical requirements of PSI/E.
Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor
Proven experience in Qualitative analysis software
Conduct observations and market inquiries on structured or unstructured tools
Conduct transcription (both high level and verbatim) for interviews conducted.
Note taking, using audio recording devices, as well as employing response matrices to document and label qualitative data as needed
Collect data on various and varying levels and a wide variety of programs and health areas.
The qualitative data collector is responsible to Actively participate and successfully complete trainings for data collectors, participate in field testing of the data collection tools, work under the research protocols and ethical standards specified for the particular studies and demonstrate humility and professionalism in data collection projects.
Must have a BSc Degree in Health, Social sciences or related fields. Having an advanced degree is an advantage
Must have at least 2 years’ experience in qualitative data collection
Certified experience of qualitative data collection, transcription or a writing sample for transcriptions conducted in the past.
Experience in qualitative data collection (e.g., Key Informant Interviews, FGDs). Experience of demonstrable FGD moderation, report compiled (sample)
Proven ability to communicate and facilitate sessions with research subjects
Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills in a specific local language.
Fluency in any of the local languages such as (Amharic, Afan Oromo, Sidama Afoo, Tigrigna, or Somali languages )as well as English
Ability to work effectively as part of a team
Willingness to work in all survey areas
Excellent interpersonal skills and a good team spirit.
Ability to meet deadlines with accuracy and attention to detail.
