Background:

OICE’s vision is to ensure that everyone has a dignified means to a decent living. For over 50 years, Opportunities Industrialization Centers – Ethiopia (OICE) has served its community by combating unemployment among women and youth. Initially established as a vocational training institute, OICE has empowered vulnerable groups with marketable skills. OICE has expanded its efforts to address the challenges faced by refugees, migrants, and displaced individuals through integrated skill development and job creation programs.It also provides a safe and nurturing environment for children, enabling mothers to engage in productive activities with peace of mind, contributing to their economic empowerment.

The Health Officer plays a crucial role in supporting the health and well-being of children and mothers participating in the Integrated Livelihood Enhancement and Early Childhood Development (ECD) project. Funded by the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation, this initiative aims to enhance the lives of vulnerable children aged 6 months to 4 years and their mothers. The project provides a safe and nurturing environment for children.

The Health Officer will ensure the delivery of quality health services within the childcare centers, contribute to the development of safeguarding and health-related organizational policies, and collaborate with other team members to implement health awareness sessions.

Purpose of the Role:

To provide comprehensive health services and promote the overall well-being of children in the ECD project.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Health Assessment and Care:

    • Conduct regular health assessments for children and mothers.

    • Provide basic healthcare services, including first aid, immunization support, and nutrition counseling.

    • Monitor the growth and development of children, ensuring that they meet key health milestones.

  • Health Education and Awareness:

    • Organize and conduct health awareness sessions for mothers and caregivers on topics such as nutrition, hygiene, and disease prevention.

    • Develop and distribute health education materials tailored to the needs of the community.

  • Health Record Management:

    • Maintain accurate health records for all children in the project.

    • Ensure that health data is regularly updated and accessible to relevant team members.

  • Collaboration and Interaction:

    • Work closely with OIC-E’s administrative and program staff to ensure integrated service delivery.

    • Engage with other caregivers and staff members to implement holistic care plans for children.

  • Emergency Response:

    • Be prepared to respond to health emergencies within the childcare centers, providing immediate care and coordinating with external health services as needed.

  • Community and Stakeholder Engagement:

    • Collaborate with local health authorities and other stakeholders to enhance the delivery of health services.

    • Participate in community outreach programs to promote the project's health objectives.

Job Requirements

Qualifications:

  • Education:

    • A minimum of Level Four in Public Health, Nursing, or a related field is required.

  • Experience:

    • Minimum of 2 years of experience in health services, preferably in maternal and child health.

    • Experience working with children under the age of 5.

    • Previous experience in community health programs is an advantage.

  • Skills:

    • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.

    • Ability to work effectively in a team and interact with diverse groups.

    • Proficiency in Amharic; knowledge of other local languages is an asset.
