Since 1970, Samaritan’s Purse has helped meet needs of people who are victims of war, poverty, natural disasters, disease, and famine. Samaritan’s Purse is privileged to be part of the humanitarian effort in Ethiopia and legally registered as foreign charity to work in Ethiopia since October 08, 2018.

JOB SUMMARY

Under direct supervision of the Protection/MHPSS Program Manager, the protection officer will carry out trauma healing, GBV and protection activities. The scope of the work would include individual and group trauma counselling, working with ToTs, adaptation of trauma healing curriculum, and monitoring program progress.   

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide and facilitate comprehensive trauma healing counseling to conflict affected beneficiaries based on the adapted approach. 

  • Provide assessment and counseling both at individual and group level as the situation demands 

  • Work in close collaboration with the TFT counselor to ensure on-going needs of at-risk groups, women and girls are being met in the prevention related activities.

  • Strengthen existing referral systems and networks of psychosocial service providers

  • Conduct sensitization and capacity building sessions with the wider population about issues of trauma and GBV

  • Identify and strengthen Community structures through engaging community leaders, faith leaders and schools to ensure that the survivors receive adequate support at the community level.

  • Produce a monthly protection report to be distributed to stakeholders and donor

Job Requirements

EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE NEEDED

  • BA Degree in Psychology, social work or related fields; MA or other related advanced degree is preferred.

  • Minimum 2 years work experience in counselling and psychosocial support. 

  • Experience in group therapy, Christian counseling, is advantageous 

  • Experience of working with refugees, IDPs and returnees 

 SKILLS REQUIRED:

 Extensive Training in trauma healing, counselling is preferred 

  • Knowledge of SPHERE and established international protection and GBV standards, methodology and tools. 

  • Knowledge of multi-sectoral approaches to mainstreaming protection.

  • Proficient in use of computers

LANGUAGE SKILLS

  • English, Tigrigna and Amharic.

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral diagram, or schedule form.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to outside weather conditions, extreme cold, and extreme heat.  The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; risk of electrical shock; risk of radiation; and vibration.  The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Position could require extensive travel in and out of the field.
