Job Description
Under the immediate supervision of Center Manager, the senior Druggist/Junior Pharmacist is responsible for the day-to-day activities at the dispensing units and warehouse at MSIE. This role involves dispensing of medicines, the safe storage of drugs, contraceptives, and consumable medical and non-medical supplies. The incumbent will receive, document, and dispose of items as necessary, prepare monthly reports on drug consumption and purchase requirements, and dispense medicines and contraceptives as directed by healthcare professionals.
Dispensing:
Reviewing prescriptions both electronic and from paper from health care providers to ensure accuracy, to ascertain the needed ingredients and to evaluate their suitability for the patient.
Providing information and advice about drugs, their side effects, correct dosage, and proper storage.
Keeping records such as pharmacy files, patient profiles, inventories, and registries of controlled drugs.
Working with other health professionals to plan, monitor, review or evaluate the quality or effectiveness of drugs.
Maintaining stock and storing and handling it properly.
Analyzing prescribing trends to monitor patient compliance and to prevent over or under stock.
Maintains contact with other department heads, medical staff and nursing staff to determine needs, resolve problems, improve processes and promote effective drug therapy.
Inventory Management
Receive, verify, and manage the inventory of pharmaceuticals and medical supplies.
Maintain accurate records of all stock transactions, including receiving, issuing, and disposing of expired or damaged products.
Conduct regular stock counts and ensure proper documentation.
Monitor stock levels and place orders as necessary to ensure the availability of essential supplies.
Implement and maintain an organized and secure storage system.
Quality Control
Ensure all products are stored in appropriate conditions to maintain their quality and efficacy.
Regularly check for expired or near-expiry items and ensure their proper disposal according to regulations.
Ensure compliance with safety and health standards in the storage and handling of medical products.
Customer Service
Assist customers and medical staff in selecting and purchasing appropriate products.
Provide accurate information on the usage, dosage, and side effects of medications.
Handle customer inquiries and complaints in a professional and courteous manner.
Regulatory Compliance
Ensure all activities related to the handling, storage, and distribution of pharmaceuticals comply with national regulations and organizational policies.
Stay updated on changes in pharmaceutical regulations and implement necessary adjustments in store operations.
Coordination and Communication
Collaborate with the procurement department to ensure timely and accurate ordering of stock.
Coordinate with healthcare providers to ensure the availability of necessary medical supplies.
Maintain clear communication with the store manager and pharmacy manager regarding inventory status and needs.
Administrative Duties
Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of all transactions and inventory movements.
Prepare and submit regular reports on stock levels, inventory turnover, and any discrepancies.
Manage the store’s filing system to ensure easy retrieval of documents.
Keep the store clean, organized, and secure always.
Perform other related duties as assigned by the store manager or pharmacy manager.
Qualification Requirements
Education: Diploma in Pharmacy or a related field.
Experience:
Senior Druggist: At least 4 years of experience in a similar role, preferably in a medical or pharmaceutical environment.
Junior Pharmacist: 1-2 years of experience in a similar role, preferably in a medical or pharmaceutical environment.
Skills, Attitudes, and Attributes
Strong knowledge of pharmaceutical products and medical supplies.
Excellent organizational and time management skills.
Strong communication and customer service skills.
Attention to detail and accuracy in inventory management.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Proficiency in the usage of computers and office software packages.
Awareness of MOH and donor guidelines.
Pro-choice stance.
Other Requirements:
Must be registered and licensed as a druggist/Junior pharmacist in the relevant jurisdiction.
Knowledge of inventory management software is an advantage.
