Job Description

Main Duties and Responsibilities

He/she shall: 

Under the guidance of the direct supervisor, the protection officer will be responsibilities, among others include the following.

  • Design, plan, implement, and monitor protection, GBV, and child protection activities in LWF operational woredas. 

  • Provide capacity-building support for the community based structures, duty bearers and rights holder on the Child protection, GBV, PSS and other protection area.  

  • Coordinate with relevant local authorities, partners and UN agencies during selection of the Beneficiaries and distribution of items and cash for IDP and host communities. 

  • Lead the implementation of project activities pertaining to child protection, case management, gender-based violence (GBV), peace building and psychosocial support.  

  • Ensure protection mainstreaming into all sectors.     

  • Work with the various formal and informal community institutions to establish support structures for the affected communities, 

  • Represent LWF in all forums relevant to protection including protection cluster at regional and local levels as appropriate 

  • Maintain protection presence through regular field monitoring and reports, making direct contact with persons of concern, host communities, local authorities and partners

  • Ensure that the perspectives, capacities, needs and resources of the persons of concerns are reflected in the protection planning processes and operation plans addressing the specific protection needs of women and men, children, youth and older persons and persons with disabilities.   

  • Facilitate establishment and reactivation, and monitor proper functionality of CRM committees to increase community voice, promote community empowerment and participation in decisions making, and to build and maintain trust and transparency with the community.

  • Work with other partners to develop/update CP and GBV referral pathway in the IDP camps.  

  • Work with the Peace Building Officer in Carrying out CBPS and community-based protection approaches.

  • Lead the operation team in reviewing progress and results, identify gaps and solutions and share technical ideas for the project staff as well as his/her supervisors

  • Select target communities and project priority groups jointly with project staff, local government and community representatives and other relevant stakeholders,

  • Conduct training on relevant thematic areas to staff and target group members,

  • Provide technical backstopping and facilitation, work closely with partners, field staff, and cluster based stakeholders, networks, and community members to ensure achievement of objectives in timely and cost effective manner;

  • Establish sustainability mechanisms and structures that will emphasize participation of vulnerable groups including children, GBV survivors and other individuals in need of protection.

Job Requirements

Qualification 

  • Bachelor’s or master's /Degree from a recognized university/college Relevant experience of at least 2 years preferably in an international NGO

Additional requirement. 

  • Experience in working with various donors and familiarity to donor requirements (e.g., PRM, ECHO, EU, UN agencies, SIDA, GAC)

  • Experience in food security, livelihoods, WASH and Protection is preferred.

  • Basic knowledge of CHS Accountability Standards and Humanitarian principles including the Code of Conduct, Protection, Age and Disability Inclusion in Humanitarian activities.

  • Creative and able to work with limited resources.

  • Knowledge of local language Tigrigna is advantageous

  • Ability to work independently with minimal or no supervision.

  • Strong English language ability (both written and verbal) and ability to produce cohesive, informative reports.

  • Previous related experience in INGO set up is advantageous.

  • Computer skills including ability to use SPSS, Kobo Collect, Survey CTO, etc;
