Position Title: Deputy Principal, Primary School
Office/ programme: SOS Hermann Gmeiner School, Addis Ababa – Kality Facility
Location: Addis Ababa
Reports to: Primary Principal
Additional Instruction from: Managing principal, & Education and Training Manager
Supervises: Primary school teachers

Under the direct supervision and guidance of primary Principal, the position holder is generally responsible for planning, coordinating and directing the work and day to day activities of teaching professionals; preparing and controlling budgets; prioritizing expenditures; implementation of academic, social and emotional learning programs. He or she is also responsible for the effective operation and general administration of the primary school. He/she will administer and supervise the school and its employees, lead development of educational program improvement, foster a culture of positive, engaged learners, and serve as a strong advocate for the school’s core values including developmental philosophy and parental involvement.

The successful candidates will have the following major responsibilities in the area of education program management, instructional leadership, operations management, human resource management, business management and communications management (details in the JD)
1. Educational Qualification
BA/BSc/MA/MSc degree or higher in Educational Planning and Management, Educational Leadership, Curriculum, Pedagogical Science, Educational Psychology, or related discipline;
Additional training in human resource management, financial management and physical resource management
2. Experience:
Minimum of 2-year experience for MA/MSc degree holders and 4-year experience for BA/BSc degree holders in school management positions
Experience of coaching and developing staff
Experience in school environment is mandatory
Experience working with a culturally and linguistically diverse community environment
3. Competency Requirements
In order to carry out the duties and responsibilities of the position, the Deputy Primary School Principal is required to have the following competencies.
3.1 Personal competency: In order to succeed, the candidate must foster a culture of excellence through personal leadership and specifically he/she must:

3.2 Instructional Leadership: The successful candidate must have sound knowledge of curriculum, instruction and assessment to improve student learning. More specifically, he/she:
Implement the professional practice of instruction and assessment that result in high achievement and accountability for all learners.
Is knowledgeable about curriculum and instruction as well as emerging education practices
Constantly refreshes this knowledge through ongoing professional development.
Develops implements and evaluates curricular and co-curricular programs to accelerate learning for students in the primary school.
Follow up daily safety of children.
Demonstrates commitment to classroom teaching by setting clear expectations and observing, coaching and evaluating teachers and staff
Exhibit ability and willingness to support teachers in using effective instructional strategies to meet students’ diverse learning needs
Demonstrates commitment to assess student learning and ensures the provision of specific and timely feedback to teachers and students
Continuous follow up of teachers duties and provides feedback for remedial action.
Has ability to align standards, curricula, instructional strategies and assessment tools.
Check and approve different operational plans and give feedback timely.
3.3 Resource Management:
Ensures that the school is a professional learning community by establishing and maintaining processes and systems that result in recruitment, induction, support, evaluation, development, and retention of high-performing staff
Engages in best professional practices targeted at student achievement and deploys budgets, schedules, staff, and other resources to secure best results for all students
Facilitate the distribution of teaching and learning materials for the respective teachers and students.
Manages time in relation to student learning priorities.
Designs structures and processes that result in community engagement, support, and ownership.
Proactively creates opportunities for parents/guardians, community members, and business representatives to be involved in and show support for the schools.
3.4 Interpersonal competency:
Communicates clearly, appropriately, and effectively to different audiences and individuals.
actively listens and seeks to clarify information and intent of other communicators in the school environment
Demonstrates ability to understand and analyze data from multiple sources
uses data to identify student learning trends, make decisions, set goals, monitor and modify instruction, and improves students achievement
develops school culture and practices that rely on data to inform professional development and decision making
Understands the school community within the social and cultural context of the broader community.
3.5 Ethical and Professional Leadership:
Has collaborative behavior with the school staff and community members to create a positive context for learning by fulfilling professional responsibilities with honesty and integrity, and serves as a model for the professional behavior of others;
Must be knowledgeable about and acts in accordance with regional and federal statutes as well as with school policy;
Passes decisions and takes actions which are consistently targeted to the well-being of the students and school community and demonstrates high standards of professional practice and behavior.
Ability to:
Plan, coordinate, and direct work and activities of teaching professionals
Manage budgets, prioritize expenditures, and seek innovative methods for providing school resources;
Promote and market educational programs and services of the school;
Communicate clearly and effectively in both oral and written language (local and national language, and English);
Establish and maintain positive, respectful relationships with a variety of people and stakeholders
Engaging families and the larger community in the life of the school
Organize and facilitate trainings
