The Armauer Hansen Research Institute (AHRI) is a renowned medical research institute established in 1970 by the Government of Ethiopia in collaboration with Save the Children organizations of Norway and Sweden, and the University of Bergen. Named after Gerhard Henrik Armauer Hansen, the Norwegian physician who discovered the leprosy bacillus, AHRI is dedicated to biomedical research aimed at the prevention, control, and treatment of mycobacterium and other public health challenges.

Job Summary

AHRI is seeking a proactive Junior IT Specialist to join our IT team. The ideal candidate will assist in managing the institute’s IT infrastructure, including user support, basic network administration, hardware and software installation, and troubleshooting. The Junior IT Specialist will work under the guidance of senior IT staff to ensure smooth daily IT operations, providing technical support and maintaining the institute’s IT environment. This role is a great opportunity for an entry-level IT professional looking to grow their skills in a dynamic research environment.

Duties & Responsibilities

• Provide technical support for end-users, including hardware and software troubleshooting.

• Assist in the installation, configuration, and maintenance of desktops, laptops, printers, and other peripheral devices.

• Support basic network administration tasks, including monitoring network performance, addressing connectivity issues, and configuring network devices (routers, switches).

• Ensure efficient operation of operating systems (Windows, Linux) and maintain system updates and patches.

• Assist with software deployment, security updates, and antivirus monitoring.

• Perform regular IT asset management, including tracking and documenting hardware and software inventory.

• Provide support for virtual meeting platforms and video conferencing systems.

• Assist in maintaining backup procedures and supporting data recovery efforts.

• Work closely with IT team.

• Contribute to IT documentation, including creating user guides and technical instructions.

• Support research teams by addressing IT-related needs promptly and efficiently.

• Other duties as assigned by the IT Executive Office or the Institute.

Job Requirements

Education & Experience:

• BSc in Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related field.

• 0 years of relevant knowledge in computer science and Information technology.

Additional Qualifications:

• Should have passed the exit exam.  

• Knowledge of basic networking concepts (LAN, WAN, VPN) and experience with network devices (routers, switches).

• Proficiency in installing, configuring, and troubleshooting hardware (PCs, printers, etc.) and software (Windows, Office 365, etc.).

• Familiarity with operating systems such as Windows and Linux.

• Knowledge of security best practices and the ability to manage user accounts and permissions.

• Basic understanding of cloud services and virtualization (desirable).

• Certifications in CompTIA A+, Network+, or equivalent are a plus.

• Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting abilities.

• Good communication skills and the ability to work well with non-technical staff.

• Ability to manage time effectively and prioritize tasks.

• Willingness to learn and adapt to new technologies.
